Conversations with Luciana Kube

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luciana Kube.

Hi Luciana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a Venezuelan writer, singer, professor, and researcher. My field of work encompasses cultural studies and traditions in relation to literature and music. Although I have lived in Spain and the United States, I have never stopped thinking about or dreaming of Venezuela, a country to which I dedicate much of my work.

I am also the founder of the Latin Folk Lab, that I live in Miami with my dear family. I explore Latin American folk traditions through contemporary fusion, literary writing, and interdisciplinary performance.

My artistic practice investigates the relationship between music, text, and cultural memory, treating song as a living archive of identity, migration, and diasporic experience..

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Working in the Humanities and in the music field it’s not always easy, but I am already used to it after three decades devoted to it.

The road has been anything but smooth, yet the most important thing is that I never gave up.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a singer, you bring to your artistic work the same depth, perseverance, and intellectual sensibility that define my academic career. My background in music is not separate from my work in the Humanities; rather, both disciplines inform one another through interpretation, expression, and cultural understanding. After more than three decades devoted to the arts and education, you have developed a voice shaped not only by musical training, but also by resilience, emotional nuance, and a profound commitment to artistic expression.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
What often surprises those who know me is my capacity to work interdisciplinarily and to move fluidly across genres in my singing practice — from academic and liturgical repertoires to Latin American folk and popular traditions. Throughout my career, I have understood artistic expression not as something confined to a single form, but as a space where music, literature, performance, and cultural memory continuously intersect.

Currently, I am also developing my own cultural initiative, Latin Folk Lab. Latin Folk Lab is an interdisciplinary performance project that reimagines Latin American folk traditions through contemporary vocal practice, literary authorship, and narrative performance. The project approaches song as a living archive of cultural memory, integrating music, text, and oral traditions into a cohesive artistic language.

A central dimension of the project is the revitalization of marginalized communities through the recovery, reinterpretation, and activation of sonic identities and ancestral oral traditions as living cultural practices. Through performance and community engagement, the project seeks to highlight both the continuity and transformation of Latin American cultural traditions within diasporic contexts.
