Today we’d like to introduce you to Keenan Pinkney.
Hi Keenan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Being a part of the musical business for many years, I believe I have become a well known and accomplished saxophonist. I have emphatically made an impression in the South Florida area as well as many other states throughout the country. My journey began as a young kid growing up in the city of Pompano Beach with the humble beginnings of starting to play the saxophone in high school at Ely High School. As a part of the Ely High Marching Tigers, he embarked upon a journey to embrace the saxophone in its fullness, which led me to where I am today. After leaving high school, I joined the armed forces to be a part of the Army’s band where I toured around the country performing while being on call to serve at a moments notice. But still feeling incomplete and unfulfilled, after a four year tour of duty, I began performing for numerous artists that included genres such as gospel, rhythm & blues and jazz, This included the opportunity and privilege to professionally record. My recording accomplishments include Marc Cooper and Friends, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, and the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Then opportunities began to open up with artists including: John Pee Kee, Yolanda Adams, Milton Brunson and the Thompson Community Choir, Miami Mass Choir, as well as Rhythm & Blues artists, Rude Boys and Lo Key. These opportunities continued to open doors for me to even perform overseas in countries such as Jamaica, the Bahamas, France, and Nigeria. My love for this instrument as allowed me to expand my talents beyond music into the film industry to write, produce, and expand as an actor, which include credits such as In the Super Natural, Thank You for Saving Me, Exactly God, and soon to be released Instrumental Love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not always been easy. I learned from my time in the military that when you are under the leadership of someone else, you have to follow their rules. which can stifle your ability to express what you want and have within you to release and share with the world. It’s a painful thing to have so in you to release and you can’t release it because you are bounded by someone else’s rules. So knowing that sometimes other people may not see the vision that you have in the beginning until they start seeing forward progression. So, I said all of that to say, as many artists have said, I had to use my own blood, sweat, tears, and finances to start making my dreams come true.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Well, my first love is performing as a saxophonist…and with my unique ability to draw the audience in with my own style performing, I get a chance to see the faces and reactions of the audience…especially the ladies…which I can honestly say is one of my specialties! I perform a lot of private events. One of my clients include Trina the rapper, among a few other celebrity artists. After that, I enjoy performing at lounges that have an intimate setting where I can get up close and personal with my audience. One of my mottos is: I want you to feel what I feel when I’m performing. If I can accomplish that, then I know I have done my job.
Beyond performing live, as mentioned earlier, the door was opened for me to continue expanding my talents into acting, writing, and producing films, which was always a part of me. I will be releasing my own full feature film backed by SAG/AFTRA, which I am really proud of.
