Today we’d like to introduce you to Annel Mendez.
Hi Annel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a Miami-based DJ and producer performing as TechMendzz. My journey into electronic music started really young growing up in Miami, where dance music culture was everywhere. A lot of my early inspiration came from local legends like Oscar G, David Padilla, Edgar V, Ralph Falcon, and many of the DJs who helped shape Miami’s underground sound. Watching how they blended tribal rhythms, groove, energy, and emotion made a huge impact on me and pushed me toward wanting to create that same feeling for people.
I started DJing out of pure passion and curiosity, spending countless hours learning the craft, digging for music, and understanding how to move a crowd. Over time, that passion evolved into producing my own tracks and developing a sound that blends Tech House with Afro, Latin, Minimal, and Organic influences while still carrying that Miami underground energy I grew up around.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like a lot of independent artists, one of the biggest challenges has been balancing real life responsibilities while trying to grow as a musician and DJ. I work in IT during the day, so a lot of the early years meant spending late nights producing music, practicing, networking, and playing gigs while still managing a full-time career.
Another challenge has been standing out in such a competitive scene, especially in a city like Miami where there’s so much talent. There were times where opportunities didn’t work out, demos got overlooked, events changed last minute, or projects didn’t get the support I hoped for. But I think those experiences helped me grow thicker skin and stay focused on improving my craft instead of chasing quick results.
I’ve also learned that building genuine relationships and consistency matter just as much as talent. A lot of progress came from continuing to show up, supporting the community, staying humble, and trusting the process even when things moved slowly.
At the end of the day, every challenge helped shape who I am as an artist. It made me more patient, more creative, and more motivated to keep pushing my sound forward while staying true to the Miami underground culture that inspired me in the first place.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As TechMendzz, I focus on creating and performing music that blends Tech House with Afro, Latin, Minimal, and Organic influences, all rooted in the energy of Miami’s underground scene. My sets are groove-driven and rhythm-focused, inspired by the tribal and percussive sounds I grew up around.
I’m most proud of staying authentic to my sound while continuing to grow as both a DJ and producer. Being able to play respected venues across Miami and release my own original music has been a huge milestone for me. Recent releases like Enfermera on Senssual Records and Art on KMT Records
have helped me further define my sound and connect with a wider audience.
What sets me apart is the combination of Miami influences, Latin percussion, and the way I build energy throughout a set. I always try to create an experience that feels organic, hypnotic, and connected rather than simply playing tracks back-to-back.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories was growing up in Cuba during the early 90s. Back then, life was much simpler and we spent most of our time outside instead of being surrounded by technology. We would play in the yard for hours, especially with chivichanas, which were homemade carts built out of wood with metal bearings as wheels. We also played a street game called “cuatro esquinas,” which was basically our version of baseball using only a rubber ball and a four-way street instead of a bat and field.
Looking back, those experiences taught me creativity, community, and how to enjoy the moment with very little. I think that upbringing still influences who I am today, both personally and artistically.
