Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Maharaj.
Hi Alyssa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Tings was born during COVID, a moment of stillness that pushed me deeper into my creativity and purpose. What started as a personal outlet quickly became something more intentional.
At the heart of the brand is my mom’s breast cancer journey, which inspired the hand drawn pink heart (Yes I drew my own logo!) as the brand logo a symbol of strength, love, and resilience woven into every piece. My West Indian roots shape the soul of Tings, influencing its boldness, vibrancy, and unapologetic sense of self.
Tings isn’t just clothing it’s a reflection of culture, meaning, and identity. And this is only beginning. the Every step of the journey, from small wins to challenges, has shaped where I am today, and I’m still evolving, still building, and still excited about what’s next.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building Tings from the ground up meant learning everything on my own, the design, production, branding, and navigating the business side without a blueprint.
There were moments of doubt, financial pressure, and figuring out how to stay consistent, especially in the beginning. Balancing creativity with the reality of running a business was one of the biggest challenges.
But every obstacle pushed me to grow. It taught me resilience, discipline, and how to trust my vision even when things felt uncertain and that’s what continues to drive the brand forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I design and build pieces under Tings that are rooted in self-expression, culture, and meaning creating statement pieces that feel effortless but intentional.
My background in the automotive industry shaped a lot of who I am today. I worked my way up from the ground level into a leadership role, which taught me discipline, resilience, and how to move with purpose qualities I carry directly into my brand.
I’m known for blending bold, clean aesthetics with deeper storytelling, like the pink heart symbol inspired by my mom’s strength, and the influence of my West Indian roots woven into the energy of each piece.
What I’m most proud of is building something real something people connect with. What sets me apart is that everything I create comes from lived experience. There’s intention behind every detail, and that authenticity speaks for itself.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the fashion industry shifting even more toward authenticity, storytelling, and purpose-driven brands. People aren’t just buying clothes anymore they’re connecting with meaning, culture, and the story behind what they wear. I also think we’ll continue to see a rise in independent brands shaping the space, rather than just traditional fashion houses.
For me, life happened, and I had to take a step back from designing for a bit but it’s just a pause, not the end. If anything, it’s given me more clarity and inspiration for what I want Tings to become.
I see the future of the brand evolving with intention staying true to its roots while growing into something even more impactful. This break is just part of the journey, not something that will stop it.
