Life & Work with Shawana McCullough of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawana McCullough.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey with You’ve Been Baked began from a very personal place. In 2021, I started baking simply as an act of love for my husband. It was something intimate, him wanting me to learn how to bake for our home. Me just me in the kitchen creating moments through desserts for someone I cared deeply about. I started experimenting with different recipes until I would eventually create my own. Eventually I would master the art of baking through delicious sweet treats.

In 2023, after experiencing his loss, everything shifted. Baking was no longer just something I did for him- it became something that carried me. My kitchen became a place of peace, healing, and reflection. What started as a simple act of love transformed into a form of therapy and a way to navigate one of the most difficult seasons of my life.

As I continued baking, I began sharing my desserts with others—family, friends, and eventually my community. The response was overwhelming. People weren’t just enjoying the flavors; they were connecting to the care, intention, and emotion behind what I created. That’s when I realized this was bigger than baking—it was purpose.

Today, You’ve Been Baked has grown into a brand known for bold, flavorful desserts and meaningful experiences. From selling cake slices at local events and partnering with restaurants, to teaching other women how to bake with confidence, I’ve been able to turn my passion into both a business and a platform.

What I’m most proud of is that my story doesn’t just end with selling desserts—it extends into helping other women rediscover themselves through baking. I’ve built a space where baking is not just a skill, but a tool for healing, confidence, and purpose.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, my journey has come with both personal and business challenges that tested me in ways I didn’t expect.

One of the biggest challenges was navigating my business while grieving the loss of someone very close to me. There were moments where it was difficult to show up, stay consistent, or even find the motivation to keep going. At the same time, that season is what deepened my faith in God and my connection to baking. It became my outlet, my therapy, and ultimately the reason I didn’t give up.

From a business standpoint, building You’ve Been Baked from the ground up without outside funding has also come with its own set of obstacles. I had to learn everything—from pricing and production to marketing and partnerships—through experience. There were moments of trial and error, wasted ingredients, long nights, and figuring out how to scale without burning out.

Another challenge has been transitioning from doing everything myself to thinking like a business owner. Letting go, building systems, and finding ways to grow beyond just physically baking every cake has been a learning process.

But every challenge has shaped the business into what it is today. It’s taught me resilience, discipline, and how to build something with intention. And more importantly, it’s allowed me to create a brand that people connect with not just because of the desserts, but because of the story and purpose behind it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At You’ve Been Baked, I specialize in creating bold, flavorful desserts that bring both comfort and connection. My menu focuses on cakes, cupcakes, and dessert slices, everything from my signature red velvet and 7up pound cake to sweet potato, coconut, and classic chocolate. Each dessert is made with intention, not just for taste, but for the experience it creates.

Beyond baking, I’ve expanded into teaching and consulting, helping other women build confidence in the kitchen and learn how to bake from scratch with clarity and purpose. Through my Bake and Become approach, I show that baking can be more than just a skill, it can be a form of therapy, creativity, and even a pathway to entrepreneurship.

I’m most proud of the impact my brand has had on people. Whether it’s a customer enjoying a slice of cake that reminds them of home, or a woman gaining confidence through one of my recipes or lessons, those moments mean everything to me. Knowing that something I created can bring peace, joy, or even healing is what keeps me going.

What sets me apart is the heart behind what I do. You’ve Been Baked isn’t just about desserts, it’s about purpose. My story is woven into every product, and people feel that. I’ve built my brand around authenticity, quality, and meaningful connection, and that’s what continues to resonate with my community.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The quality that has been most important to my success is resilience.

Building You’ve Been Baked required me to keep going even in moments when things felt uncertain, personally and professionally. There were times I had to show up while grieving, figure things out without guidance, and push through challenges that could have easily made me stop. But resilience allowed me to stay committed to the vision, even when the process wasn’t easy.

It’s also what helped me grow. Instead of being discouraged by setbacks, I learned to adapt, refine, and keep moving forward. Whether it was perfecting my recipes, building my brand, or stepping into new opportunities like teaching and partnerships, resilience gave me the strength to evolve.

More than anything, it’s what transformed this business from just baking into something meaningful. It allowed me to turn pain into purpose, and that’s what continues to drive everything I do today.
