Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic DeLaney.
Dominic, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a traveling musician for the last 8 years, playing over 530+ shows in 33/50 US States, frequently touring by Amtrak train, retracing the steps of greats like Woody Guthrie.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not always – during the COVID pandemic my drinking and drugging got out of control. When it came time to get back out and perform, I was constantly self sabotaging my shows and tours. Thankfully these days I’m more than four years sober, and never been more motivated for the grind of life as a touring musician.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The past few years I’ve been labeled the “Train Traveling Troubadour” – in my travels I’ve met musician who have REALLY traveled the trains, sometimes illegally, so the nickname feels a little silly compared to the likes of friends like Blossomin’ Bone, and artists like Yes Ma’am, but I like it, so I’ll keep it.
I think one of the things I’m most proud of, and find the most beauty in, is the resiliency that this lifestyle requires. I am typically told “no” a thousand times for every “yes” I get, but that’s what makes it special.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I wish I knew how doable traveling was when I was younger. I started touring in my mid20’s, late by some peoples standards.
If you want to tour, go book one. It really is that simple, and if you love it, do it again.
