Today we’d like to introduce you to Ella Furness.
Hi Ella, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Ella Furness! I am a photographer based in South Florida.
I mainly specialize in fashion photography – model test shoots, digitals, brand shoots, and so on. However, I love pretty much every style of photography!
I originally started my professional career as a photographer about 2 years ago, working for an interior designer as her social media manager and photographer. That being said, photography is something I have loved for as long as I can remember as a hobby!
I was born in Princeton, New Jersey, but moved when I was about 2 to Detroit, Michigan. Then my family moved to California, Washington State, and now Arizona while I moved to Florida! I also spent about a year abroad in Rome, Italy as well. Having grown up blessed enough to travel and move around frequently definitely inspired me to start taking photos of my travels, and this hobby has followed me throughout my life ever since and has now blossomed into a passionate career!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting your own business in any field is not easy! It takes so much time and consistent effort. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes: reaching out to new potential clients, constantly building social media marketing, developing a diverse portfolio, and so on.
For months and months on end at the start of my career I was driving all over South Florida doing free photoshoots to build my portfolio! The amount of time and energy spent on building a business is a lot, and for some time it can feel unrewarding. However, with the consistent effort and building up a reliable reputation and intriguing portfolio, clients will eventually begin to find you!
One thing I struggle with is taking a break and giving myself time to rest and not be working. Being a photographer can be pretty 24/7 between scheduling and planning shoots, editing and making content, and so on!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer who specializes in fashion photography. I love utilizing natural light for outdoor shoots in nature, at the beach, or even in the city, but I also really enjoy curated studio lighting for a more editorial, polished look as well. My work is definitely very clean, colorful, and bright. It’s important to me for a photo to invoke emotion and tell a story. I like to keep my editing very clean and light in order to capture the true beauty of my clients!
I am most proud of my work when my clients react positively, telling me things like these are the best photos they’ve received of themselves! Nothing makes me happier than being able to remind people how beautiful they are, and I try to express that through my work at every shoot I do. I think something that sets me apart is my ability to make my clients feel so comfortable. I always am interested in getting to know the people I work with on a personal level, and I think that allows them to feel relaxed during the shoot, which to me makes the photos come out so much better!
