Today we’d like to introduce you to Winnie Tembea.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into the beauty industry started in my bedroom—really just a small setup with a dresser and a dining room chair, learning through YouTube tutorials and pure passion. At the time, I had just cut my hair and was looking for a way to still feel feminine and expressive, and makeup became that outlet for me. I experimented a lot, especially with special effect looks in the beginning, just creating for the love of it.
When I started posting my work and people began asking to book and pay me, that’s when it clicked that this could be more than a hobby.
The transition into a studio came from a desire for growth and separation. I loved my glam corner at home, but I wasn’t living on my own yet, and I wanted to create a space where I could offer clients privacy while also allowing myself the luxury of leaving work at work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. In the beginning, I struggled a lot with self-doubt and feeling as if I wasn’t good enough to pursue this professionally. I also underpriced myself heavily because I was just starting out and didn’t yet have a full kit or the confidence I have now.
A major turning point for me was entering my esthetics program. It expanded my skill set and it made me realize that I was building something bigger than just makeup. My original brand, “Glammed By Winnie,” represented where I started, but I had outgrown it. Rebranding to Precisa Lore gave me a renewed sense of purpose—it felt aligned with the direction I was going and the level I wanted to reach. That shift reignited my motivation.
As you know, we’re big fans of Precisa Lore. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Precisa Lore is a beauty brand centered around intention, education, and experience. When clients sit in my chair, I want them to feel safe, supported, and truly heard. My goal is not only enhance their natural beauty, but care for their skin from within.
I specialize in soft glam and bridal makeup, with a focus on enhancing natural features rather than masking them. My approach to soft glam is about creating a seamless, radiant finish that compliments the client’s complexion—especially for deeper skin tones, which are often overlooked or mishandled in the industry. As a Black artist, I take pride in understanding the nuances of deeper complexions and delivering results that are balanced, soft, and never overbearing. One of the biggest compliments I receive is how natural and skin-like my finishes look.
What truly sets me apart is my skin-focused approach. With my background in esthetics, I aim to go beyond the makeup application. I prioritize consultations and work with clients to understand how to improve their skin leading up to major events such as weddings. I believe makeup is only as good as the skin underneath, so I take pride in educating my clients to give them tools that last beyond their appointment.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of my consistency. Entrepreneurship comes with a lot of highs and lows—self-doubt, comparison, and moments of uncertainty—but I’ve continued to show up and grow through every phase. Becoming licensed and stepping into a more professional space has been a huge milestone for me. At its core, Precisa Lore is about educating, inspiring, and telling a story.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
In the beginning, YouTube was my biggest resource for learning. I spent countless hours watching tutorials and practicing, which gave me a strong foundation without needing expensive training upfront.
As I grew, I invested in online courses from artists I admired, including my first virtual course from a young makeup artist based in Chicago. That experience showed me the value of learning at my own pace and continuously investing in my craft.
I’ve always been a big reader, and I still prioritize books focused on professional development, self-growth, and business. While I’ve only recently started exploring podcasts, a lot of my growth has come from self-discipline and consistent practice—dedicating time almost every weekend my first few years’ into trying new looks and refining my skills.
