Daily Inspiration: Meet Jess Penuela

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Penuela.

Hi Jess, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I didn’t originally start in photography, my creative background actually began in fashion design, where I spent over a decade working closely with color, texture, and visual storytelling. That experience shaped the way I see and create, but over time, I found myself wanting something more personal and human-centered.

Photography became that for me.

What started as a creative outlet quickly turned into something much deeper. I realized I wasn’t just interested in how things looked, but in how they felt, the in-between moments, the emotion, and the connection between people. That shift is what led me to build my business.

I eventually launched J.Nichole Captures and grew it into a Boston-based wedding photography business, focusing on documenting weddings and elopements in a way that feels natural, intentional, and true to each couple. Like many entrepreneurs, the early stages were a mix of learning, refining, and figuring things out as I went, not just creatively, but from a business standpoint as well.

Over time, I’ve really stepped into my role not just as a photographer, but as someone my clients can trust throughout the entire experience. I take a relationship-driven approach, blending candid storytelling with a refined, editorial feel.

I’m originally from Miami and travel back often, and I’m currently focused on continuing to grow my presence there alongside my work in Boston. It feels like a full-circle moment, building something in a place that played such a big role in shaping who I am.

At its core, my work has always been about people, capturing real moments, real emotion, and creating something that lasts far beyond the day itself.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think that’s part of building anything meaningful.

One of the biggest challenges was learning how to balance the creative side with the business side. Photography came naturally, but things like pricing, boundaries, and client experience took time and real-world learning.

In the beginning, I said yes to everything. Over time, I learned the importance of valuing my work, setting clear boundaries, and aligning myself with the right clients.

There have also been moments of burnout, especially during busy seasons, but those experiences pushed me to build better systems and approach my work more intentionally.

Looking back, every challenge played a role in shaping both my business and my confidence as a creative.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a wedding and elopement photographer, and I specialize in documenting moments in a way that feels natural, intentional, and true to each couple. My approach is very relationship-driven, I focus on creating an experience where my clients feel comfortable enough to be fully present, which is what allows me to capture real emotion.

I’m known for blending candid storytelling with a refined, editorial feel. I want my images to not only look beautiful, but to feel honest and lasting.

What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. A lot of my work comes from referrals and connections, which tells me that the experience I’m creating matters just as much as the final images.

What sets me apart is that I don’t approach weddings as just another event to document. I’m very intentional about how I show up, from helping shape timelines to being a calm, supportive presence throughout the day. I see myself as part of the overall experience, not just the person behind the camera.

At the end of the day, my goal is to create something that feels both elevated and deeply personal.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I tend to gravitate toward resources that support both creativity and mindset.

Some recent books that have really stayed with me are The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, Show Your Work! by Austin Kleon, and Captivate by Vanessa Van Edwards. Each of them, in different ways, has helped me think more intentionally about creativity, confidence, and how I show up in my work.

For podcasts, I regularly listen to The Mindset Mentor and The Mel Robbins Podcast. They’ve been especially helpful in building discipline, shifting perspective, and staying grounded through the ups and downs of running a business.

Beyond that, a lot of my inspiration comes from real-life experience, traveling, observing people, and staying connected to different environments. That’s where I find a lot of the ideas that shape my work.
