An Inspired Chat with Beth Bru of Miami Gardens

We recently had the chance to connect with Beth Bru and have shared our conversation below.

Beth , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: When have you felt most loved—and did you believe you deserved it?
I felt most loved recently at the opening of my solo exhibition, Fruits of the Spirit, hosted at the Main Library in Downtown Miami. Seeing my community fill that public space to support my vision was overwhelming. Even five years into my career, I still battle a sense of imposter syndrome, wondering if I truly deserve that level of warmth. But as the show remains open to the public through March 26, 2026, I’ve realized that the doubt gets a little quieter with every person who connects with the work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Beth Bru, a Miami-based artist who traded a path in dentistry for a life of creation. My work has always been about joy, but it took on a profound new meaning in January 2025, when I made the decision to fully dedicate my practice to God and my faith. My current solo exhibition, Fruits of the Spirit, is the physical manifestation of that surrender. Hosted at the Downtown Miami-Dade Public Library through March 26, 2026, the show explores what happens when you stop creating for yourself and start creating as an act of worship. It’s a reflection of my first five years as an artist, showing how faith can quiet the noise of imposter syndrome and turn it into a purposeful mission.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
Without a doubt, it was my father, Bill Bruninga. Growing up in Boulder City, Nevada, I watched him manage the Hoover Dam with incredible technical precision. As a single father, his dedication to me was unwavering, but I also saw his heart for music, I watched him master every guitar he could get his hands on. What’s been most beautiful is watching his photography career take off after I moved out; seeing his success now is a constant reminder that it’s never too late to pursue a new passion. My father taught me how to be a person of God, a person of discipline, and a person of art, all at once. My work ethic today is a direct reflection of the grit and spiritual foundation he provided.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, and it was actually quite recently. There was a season where things in the studio felt slow, and with the rising cost of living, the math of being a full-time artist just wasn’t adding up. It’s in those quiet, difficult moments that the pressure feels heaviest. But just as He always does, God came through. It reinforced my decision to trust the path He has placed me on. Art isn’t always an easy career, it’s often a test of endurance, but it’s the most rewarding one I’ve ever known. Someone once told me, ‘Always give up tomorrow,’ and that motto has kept me going through the toughest days. It’s a reminder to just stay in the fight for one more day.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
When I first started my professional career, I held onto the idea that being an artist meant being a ‘solo act.’ I had a mentor at the time who really championed that independent, do-it-yourself-alone mentality. While I now understand there is a necessary time for solitude to focus on the craft, I realize you need community to truly thrive.

The people I’ve met here in Miami, the fellow creatives, the supporters, the friends, are the reason I’m still in this city and still in this career. I’ve learned that while you might go quicker alone, you truly do go farther together. My success isn’t just mine; it’s a reflection of the community that carries me.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop the mindless ‘scroll.’ While our phones are incredible tools for artists, they can also be a massive distraction from the life happening right in front of us. In a fast-paced city like Miami, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush and lose that sense of presence. I’ve been known to struggle with remembering names. If I knew I had a decade left, I would dedicate myself to being fully present in every interaction. I want to truly see the people I meet and honor our connection by being there, in the moment, rather than behind a screen.
