Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Katz.
Hi Dan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My path into coaching was not something I originally planned as a business. For more than two decades I have worked in education, mentoring and guiding students through both academic and personal challenges. I am also a lawyer by training, and both of those roles share something important for me. They focus on helping people think clearly, navigate challenges, and move forward in their lives. I have always been drawn to work that involves helping others grow and better understand themselves.
My interest in mindfulness began much earlier, in my early twenties. Even during college I noticed that mindfulness practices helped me slow down, reflect, and connect more clearly with who I am and what truly matters to me. Like many people at that stage of life, I experienced stress and uncertainty while trying to figure out the direction of my future. Mindfulness gave me a way to step back from the constant mental noise and become more aware of my thoughts rather than being controlled by them.
Over time this curiosity grew into a deeper interest in how the mind works and how our thoughts shape our experience of life. I continued studying mindfulness and personal development for many years, first for my own growth and later as a way to better support the people I was working with.
While mentoring students and working with people in different settings, I noticed a pattern that appeared again and again. Many people are successful and capable on the outside but feel overwhelmed or disconnected internally. They often believe something is wrong with them when in reality they simply have never been taught how to understand or work with their own thinking patterns.
Because of this, I naturally began sharing the tools and perspectives that had helped me. Those conversations started informally with students, friends, and colleagues who were struggling with stress, overthinking, or life transitions. Over time it became clear that people were searching for practical ways to feel calmer and more grounded in their lives.
That realization eventually led to the creation of Positively You. Today through coaching, workshops, and content, my goal is to help people develop a healthier relationship with their thoughts and reconnect with themselves. I focus on simple, practical tools that help quiet the mental noise so people can feel calmer, clearer, and more present in their everyday lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road. One of the most significant turning points in my journey was changing careers. I originally trained and worked as a lawyer, and I genuinely valued that experience. The legal profession taught me how to think critically, communicate clearly, and approach complex problems in a structured way. I enjoyed the intellectual challenge of the work.
At the same time, I began to notice that the parts of my life that energized me most involved teaching, mentoring, and speaking with others about ideas that help people grow. Over time it became clear that while I respected the legal profession, my deeper passion involved guiding people, helping them understand themselves, and supporting their development.
During that period of my life I was also learning the importance of living authentically and making decisions that reflected who I truly am rather than what others expected my path to look like. That personal growth played an important role in my decision to move toward work that felt more aligned with my values.
Making the transition into education was both exciting and uncertain. Like many people who consider a major life change, I had to trust that choosing a path that felt meaningful would lead me in the right direction.
Another challenge came later when I began building Positively You. Turning something personal and meaningful into a public platform required stepping outside of my comfort zone. Sharing ideas about mindfulness and personal growth through workshops, coaching, and content meant becoming more visible and open about perspectives that had once been more private.
What helped me navigate those transitions was the same mindfulness practice that first drew me to this work. Mindfulness encourages reflection and intentional action rather than reacting out of fear or pressure. That perspective helped me approach each step of the journey with patience and curiosity.
Looking back, each stage contributed something important. My legal background developed discipline and critical thinking. Education deepened my love of mentoring and guiding others. Positively You grew naturally from the intersection of those experiences and my long standing interest in mindfulness.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Positively You is a mindfulness based coaching practice focused on helping people reconnect with themselves and develop a healthier relationship with their thoughts. Many people today live with constant mental noise, stress, and pressure. They often feel overwhelmed by their own thinking and believe they need to completely change their lives in order to feel better. My work focuses on helping people understand that small shifts in awareness and perspective can create meaningful change in how they experience everyday life.
Through coaching, workshops, and educational content, I teach practical tools that help people slow down their thinking, respond to challenges more intentionally, and become more aware of the patterns that shape their reactions. My approach focuses on making mindfulness accessible and realistic rather than abstract or overly complicated. I want people to leave a session or workshop with ideas and tools they can actually use that same day.
One of the things that sets Positively You apart is the combination of my professional background and my personal approach to teaching. My experience as both a lawyer and an educator shaped the way I work with people. The legal profession taught me structured thinking and clear communication, while education deepened my passion for mentoring and helping others grow. As a result, my coaching style often feels both practical and supportive. I want people to understand their minds rather than feel overwhelmed by them.
I am most proud that Positively You creates a space where people feel comfortable being honest about what they are experiencing. Many individuals quietly struggle with stress, self doubt, or feeling disconnected from themselves. When people realize that these experiences are common and that there are simple tools to navigate them, they often feel immediate relief and hope.
Ultimately, my goal is to make mindfulness feel approachable and useful in everyday life. Readers should know that Positively You is about helping people become more aware, more intentional, and more connected to themselves so they can experience their lives with greater clarity and calm.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Many people here are ambitious and driven, which is inspiring, but it can also create a fast pace that sometimes leads to stress and burnout. That is part of the reason mindfulness and intentional living resonate with so many people in this area. Learning how to slow down, reflect, and create moments of calm can make a meaningful difference in a busy environment.
What I appreciate most about this area is the incredible diversity of people and perspectives. South Florida brings together individuals from many cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences, which creates a vibrant and dynamic community. There is also a strong sense of openness here. People are often willing to express themselves, explore new ideas, and support one another in building businesses, creative projects, and community organizations. I especially value the welcoming spirit within the LGBTQ community and the many spaces that encourage people to live authentically.
Personally, I have always loved mountains and hiking, so that is one outdoor experience I sometimes miss living in South Florida. The beaches and water here are beautiful, but the landscape is very different from the kind of nature experiences that I enjoy most, but a beach day is incredible!
