Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristopher Avello.
Hi Cristopher, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My career path began as roadway inspector, managing various City of Miami and FDOT construction projects. Looking Back, I got my first shot at photography in 2010 with a nightlife photography website called SuiteStatus. I mostly went to Space Nightclub and South Beach pop-up parties. I also covered the 2011 Winter Music Conference at the Surfcomber; if it weren’t for the press pass credential I wouldn’t have taken one of my most iconic photos too day. It was Axwell backstage prepping for his set. As it turned out, my photography skills were still missing the technical aspect and I enrolled in Miami Dade Collge. During my time in Miami Dade, I earned my Associates in Film Production Technology and was part of a student film that was awarded a best student award at the Miami Film Festival. I left Miami Dade completing 6 films, learning advance cinematography, various editing softwares, and how to write for film. Despite this advancement in my career, I still struggled to get my career steam rolling, and a few Staff Me Up gigs, here and there, luckily kept me encouraged; one of them was for a Geneology Roadshow at HistoryMiami. But, over the course, of the 2014 summer, I managed to be a part of Saliva’s “Rise Up” video; when Mike Zoyes of Rum Bum Productions gave me my shot in front and behind the camera. The toughest part came when I was in Los Angeles and I received a call from my brother that father had passed away at 64. I remember the day perfectly, I was sitting in my Kipling Apartment in Koreatown, while listening to rick ross and trying to teaching myself the basics of documentary style filming, compared to Realty TV style shooting. Somehow, I pulled myself together and was hired by Bodega Pictures, as well as Redtail Media for Tru Tv, as a production assistant. You can’t imagine or draw up how much harder it was going to get. It was time for me to give me career a break and think about were I wanted to go with my career. I earned my Life, Variable, and Annuities license, and worked the telephones; from Florida Blue, to Cigna, Aetna, and Globe Life. Under this model, I was able to find something that encouraged and developed my admiration for developing content. Since, I’ve won and been selected at more film festivals.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Losing my father in 2017 was very difficult, and forcing myself to get away from being to involved with my media career, because it wasnt leading to the path I wanted
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I spend most of my time drawing up ideas and creating reasonable budgets for producing documentaries. I currently specialize in high-quality golf content that engages other social media golfers. I would say I’m most proud of my persistence for a higher education at FIU and my award-winning documentary called Medicare benefits In The Community.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Only risk I can think of till this day, is leaving behind my roadway inspector job in 2011, for my career in media services. At the time, I was earning almost $40,000 a year. Plus, I was young and demanding more from my employers. Since leaving construction, I’ve earned an Associates in Film, almost 10 years of Life, Variable, and Annuities education credits, and a semester and a half away from earning a Batchelor’s from Florida International University. Needless to say I’m hoping to cash out soon.
