Today we’d like to introduce you to Tami Jo Urban.
Hi Tami Jo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always been an artist. I started tattooing in 1992 and I graduated with my Master of Fine Arts in Medical and Biological Illustration in 1999. I have since worked for companies such as General Motors, Campbell-Ewald and JGA. I was always tattooing throughout my corporate careers.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It absolutely has not been a smooth road. Once I started working for myself, the hustle became real. I love it with every ounce of my being. In times of economical crisis it can be quite stressful to be a small business and independent artist.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an Illustrator in all corners of that trade. I am formally trained as a Medical and Biological Illustrator. Tattooing is the ultimate form of illustration, so it was logical to me how that blossomed along the way. I am most proud of my recent solo exhibition at the Delray Beach Public Library called “Soft Yellow Underbelly.” It marked an entirely new direction for me as an artist and with my work. I gave it everything I am to create.
What sets me apart form others is my attention to detail while maintaining a big-picture approach.
What are your plans for the future?
I take things one day at a time, and focus on being present and mindful. I have never once in my entire life considered a career change, keeping in mind that my skillset embraces multiple streams of creation. I draw, paint, tattoo, design, code, upcycle, just about everything I can do, I will do. That said, I am in a liminal space right now as the world of AI infiltrates the work force. I’m just rolling with it, doing what I can to accommodate progress and still maintain my aesthetic and standards.
