Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Luz Rodriguez.
Hi Mary Luz, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story started with a childhood connection to nature, which was the only place I truly felt at ease, and it eventually guided my professional life. While I was training to be a lawyer, I realized that the best way for me to make an impact was through environmental law. Through that legal specialty, I met my husband, he was an environmental trial attorney and a long-time bonsai master and early on, he took me to a class at a nursery he was developing. At the time, it was just raw land without any facilities, but I felt a strong sense of peace there. It felt like a space where the environment, the air, the water, and the wildlife came together perfectly.
We decided to build a sanctuary on that land with our own hands, and it’s where we eventually got married. As we worked on the property, other families began asking to use the space for their own milestones, so I started to see that the peace I found there was something other people experienced too. Now, our goal is to provide a setting where people can have those meaningful and transformative moments.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, my primary struggle was realizing that the legal career I had initially chosen didn’t actually align with my desire to make a difference, so finding that my passion wasn’t reciprocated by the legal field was a disappointing and confusing experience. I felt a strong obligation to use my talents for something meaningful, but I eventually realized that forced professional paths were limiting my growth, so I had to move away from those outdated expectations and cultural pressures to focus on my connection with nature instead. This process of ‘unlearning’ wasn’t easy; it required years of difficult internal work to move past those old belief systems. However, by focusing on my mental and emotional health, things began to come together. Once I prioritized that clarity, I was finally able to see a path forward that I couldn’t have recognized before.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Living Sculpture Sanctuary is a bonsai center that specializes in desert roses alongside tropical and subtropical species. While we are a botanical space, we have designed the environment to be more than just a nursery. By incorporating natural elements, we have created a setting intended to help visitors find a sense of grounding and peace. We want our guests to feel secure while they engage in their own personal growth. Our philosophy, which we call the “Sanctuary Way” is rooted in empowerment, we provide the space, but the internal work belongs to the individual.
Our signature “Living Sculptures” specifically our desert roses represent this philosophy. These plants are developed over decades, during which their trunks which are also known as the caudex, naturally form unique shapes. These sculptures serve as a metaphor for the human experience – just as we carefully develop a bonsai, we are constantly shaping ourselves through our experiences and learning from our outcomes. What sets us apart is this combination of specialized horticulture and a purposeful environment designed to facilitate mental clarity. We want our visitors to know that, like a bonsai, every person has the agency to sculpt their own life and character.
What are your plans for the future?
We are currently focused on building a professional team dedicated to personal development and transformation. By bringing together a diverse group of specialists, we are expanding our offerings to include corporate seminars, workshops, and public events that are designed to provide practical tools for individuals, couples, and organizations seeking to improve their internal culture and overall well-being. This new phase of our educational programming will be centralized under a methodology we call ‘Sanctuary Mastery’.
One of our most significant developments is the soft opening of our second phase Ibuku Avalon: a 7,000-square-foot facility designed for both artistic presentation and wellness. This structure features high-end architectural elements from around the world, including exotic stone, backlit onyx, and living walls of preserved European moss. The space is engineered to be a comfortable, year-round venue protected from the elements, featuring high ceilings and a custom wood structure reaching 38 feet. This new facility allows us to offer specialized wellness services. We have integrated state-of-the-art equipment such as infrared saunas with saline therapy, a salt lounge, and temperature-controlled plunges to support circulation and physical recovery. This expansion marks a major shift for the sanctuary, allowing us to host large-scale events and high-performance seminars in a world-class environment.
