Check Out Jason Johnson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Johnson.

Jason Johnson

Hi Jason, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into music began at age seven when my mother enrolled me in keyboard lessons. In high school, I joined the marching band drumline, where I met my mentor Manny Deenah, who introduced me to music production and engineering. That experience led me to pursue audio professionally, earning a full scholarship to Miami International University of Art and Design to study Audio Technology. After graduating in 2015, I gained industry experience through an internship at Studio Center Miami, followed by roles at HQ Studios and as lead engineer at Fuzion House, before opening my own studio, Reel Sound Studios, in 2020.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has been filled with highs and lows, constant challenges, and many moments where I heard “no” when I felt the answer should have been “yes”. Those experiences ultimately pushed me to bet on myself and open my own recording studio, my own studio where I can say yes to others. Entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy. I’ve faced difficult decisions, failed partnerships, and setbacks along the way, but the rewards have made it all worth it. Reel Sound Studios has allowed me to mentor interns, create opportunities for young engineers, and provide a creative space where clients can produce everything from music, to audiobooks to audio for commercials.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is the range of roles I’ve taken on throughout my career — from producer, recording and mixing engineer, and songwriter to studio owner, manager, educator and even event planner. More importantly, it’s the passion I bring to every project and my commitment to bringing each client’s vision to life. While some engineers simply press record, I focus on creating an experience and going the extra mile for everyone who walks through the door. I specialize in R&B, pop, and rap, but I take pride in being able to deliver high-quality results across all areas of audio production. And recently I’ve been putting on my own showcases called the Reel Sound Showcase to give artists a chance to perform their music.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next five to ten years, I expect the music industry to continue evolving, especially with the growing influence of AI. The key will be recognizing those changes early and learning how to adapt while still preserving creativity and authenticity.
