Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Harrison Albert.
Hi Dr. Harrison, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a South Florida native who grew up on the beaches of Miami and Fort Lauderdale and spent almost every family vacation in the Keys. Since I was surrounded by the marine environment from such a young age, I developed a deep interest in ocean life and knew that I wanted to study marine science once I got to college. Eventually, I made my way to the University of Miami and was extremely fortunate to be mentored by some of the world’s most renowned and esteemed professors.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road, but the bumps, potholes, roadblocks, and detours along the way are what helped shape me to be the scientist I am today, and I would not change that for the world. Each struggle was a life learning experience, and looking back, I have learned so much from each situation.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a marine scientist who focuses on the restoration of threatened aquatic habitats and ecosystems, and the conservation of protected and endangered marine species. Although my formal background is specifically in marine mammals, I have also developed knowledge and appreciation for marine invertebrates like sponges, corals, sea urchins, and conch. A unique part of my work is using several different forms of technology to access and study the ocean, like diving to 1,000ft in manned submersibles, tethered diving via umbilicals, and using full face masks while SCUBA diving. During my career, I have also had the opportunity to live underwater and do research as an “aquanaut” in a subsea habitat for a total of eight days.
What does success mean to you?
To me, success is a word used to describe the feeling of being able to reflect back and say that you accomplished the goals you set to achieve. I am a firm believer that although short term objectives can be “checked off your list”, long term success is never achieved and is what drives my daily motivation.
