Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorothy Milfort.
Hi Dorothy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
While I majored in pre-law, I have always been passionate about hospitality. My path in hospitality began in college while in New Orleans, working as a waitress and bartender. I made my way through the ranks eventually becoming a General Manager of a restaurant in the Upper East Side neighborhood of NY. Later, I pivoted from restaurants to hotels when I was hired as the Membership Supervisor of Soho House in NY. After this, I transitioned into marketing and eventually launched a branding company with my husband.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, the path to entrepreneurship has been a rewarding one. Even what some may call “struggles”, I find them to be character forming. If I were to name a challenge I’ve had considerable difficulty with, I would say that as an introvert and naturally reserved person, I struggle with networking and self promotion.
As you know, we’re big fans of Palm Cottage. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Palm Cottage honors the creolized lifestyles and traditions of the former and current French-Caribbean colonies of
Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique, St. Barthélemy (St. Barth) and Saint Martin, serving as the first hospitality concept to unite the Creole culture from a Franco-Antillean perspective. I am the Founder of the brand and am currently in the process of raising funds to launch our first location in Downtown Miami. Our offerings include French Antillean-inspired food and beverage as well as a retail store featuring home decor, children’s toys and beauty products imported from the francophone Caribbean.
