Inspiring Conversations with Courtney Burch, LMFT of Cardinal Therapy and Consulting Inc. / HONEST Health Center Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Burch, LMFT.

Hi Courtney, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up in a dysfunctional family, I struggled to navigate the dynamics I had no control over. As a young adult, I grew estranged from my family. Disconnecting, at that point, felt like self-preservation. Independent and largely alone, I ultimately found myself in therapy.

Therapy completely changed my life.

The cycles of co-dependency, dysfunction, and anxiety healed. I was able to overcome the loops of destruction that raised me. My relationships with my family improved and grew to a place where there is understanding and acceptance.

From my own healing journey, I developed a deep passion and appreciation for the insight that can arise from the therapeutic process. I then decided to pursue my own career as a therapist. I earned my Master’s degree in Couple and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in 2021. Working as a clinician, I support others who–like me–want to grow, understand, and overcome their wounds. My clients learn skills to shape their own identities, bridge the gap between family-of-origin wounds and self-creation, and develop healthy coping skills to face all of life’s unique challenges. Healing is not easy, but it is worth it. The only way out is through.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I am fortunate to look back on my story and say that any challenges that arose were necessary, beautiful, and largely evolutionary. I don’t consider life to be a series of ‘obstacles.’ The destination has never been my area of interest. I enjoy the ride, value the voyage, and celebrate the path to get to each new milestone I reach. My personal journey informs my style as a therapist: I focus on strengths rather than weaknesses, and celebrate consistency over perfection. Suffering is the greatest gift anyone can experience and I’m fortunate to guide others as they embark on their own journeys.

We’ve been impressed with Cardinal Therapy and Consulting Inc. / HONEST Health Center Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I founded my practice, Cardinal Therapy and Consulting Inc., in 2022. Cardinal Therapy and Consulting Inc. is cash-pay only and primarily serves individuals, couples, and families. My practice is ideal for those seeking individualized care with interventions that are not available with mainstream, insurance-dictated modalities.

In 2024, I joined HONEST Health Center Inc. with my business partner, Sara M. Gorman, LMFT. We collaborated together to find a way to build a therapeutic practice that accepts most commercial insurance plans while focusing on our shared clinical philosophy: people heal when they feel empowered rather than shamed, and when they are treated as whole, resilient individuals instead of a list of symptoms.

As a clinician, I work with individuals, couples, children (aged 10+) and adolescents. I primarily specialize in working with high achievers experiencing burnout, teens/parents seeking improved connection, and those seeking to improve in their daily functioning despite mental health symptoms. My clients learn how to reclaim their joy by shifting focus from their ‘problems’ to their strengths. My goal is to help people build their sense of personal empowerment through identity-growth and healing.

What makes you happy?
Happiness is not something I focus on. Happiness is momentary–a fleeting ‘blip’ that often isn’t something to hold onto.

My focus is joy.

Joy, to me, is synonymous with living. Living a full, fulfilling life is the focus of my daily experiences. I say ‘yes’ to the things that spark my creativity, motivation, and intrigue. Joy is loving relationships, the energy in crowds while watching live music, and words written on a page. Joy is bodily movement, nourishing food, and a full night’s rest. Joy is the life you want to live.
