Life & Work with Austin Carter of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Carter.

Hi Austin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Of course! Growing up in South Florida, it’s honestly pretty surreal to now be anchoring the news in Miami. After spending several years as a news reporter in Las Vegas, I took a leap of faith and moved to Miami for a temporary reporter job at CBS4 News. At the time it was just short-term work, but I was determined to stay.

Not long after I started reporting, I began filling in at the studio, anchoring weather when needed. That momentum led to being offered a permanent position as the Breaking News & Traffic Anchor on the station’s morning show. From live car chases and police standoffs to high-profile court rulings and severe weather, it’s a fast-paced role covering major stories in real time.

Most recently, I expanded my position as the anchor of CBS News Miami at 9. This has been a full-circle moment for me. Four years ago I walked through the doors as a freelance reporter with no guarantees. Now, I’m anchoring my own daily show. It’s been a reminder to me — and hopefully others — that sometimes you just have to take the first step, even if you can’t see the rest of the staircase yet.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Looking back, I’d say it’s been a relatively smooth road, but building that road has been a grind. Crafting my own identity and style, learning how to navigate the business side of TV, advocating for myself, and balancing work with personal life have all been important building blocks along the way.

It’s still very much of an ongoing learning process for me, even after a decade of working in newsrooms. For example, I work with a talent coach who evaluates my delivery, how I connect with viewers, and how I can continue to grow in a changing industry. TV is always evolving, and being eager to adapt is vital.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What viewers see on television is really just a small part of my job. Long before the cameras turn on, I’m working closely with producers and executive producers. I give input on stories we’re airing, I’m writing and proofreading scripts, and preparing for any interviews we might have. On camera, I’m translating complex or breaking news information into something that’s clear and understandable. Off camera, I’m verifying facts and reaching out to sources. It’s a lot of work behind the scenes, but I love being involved in every step — from the first editorial conversations to what viewers ultimately see on air.

It’s also very much a lifestyle. I wake up extremely early in the morning, so being prepared and showing up TV-ready is part of the commitment. We’re on the air for several hours in the morning, so keeping a routine is key to making sure I can have the energy to stay focused (lots of coffee helps, too).

What does success mean to you?
Without a doubt, it’s by having passion. It’s is what has fueled me to keep
climbing. I always knew this was what I wanted to do, so I was eager to get my foot in the door as soon as possible.

The passion to jump in was noticed by my first boss, who hired me while I was still in college. While it was behind the scenes work, it set me up with real-world experience & connections to land a TV reporting job in a larger market.
