Inspiring Conversations with Gregory Kushner of Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Kushner.

Hi Gregory, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Veterinary medicine was never just a career choice for me, it was a calling rooted in a lifelong connection to animals, fostered by a family of doctors and nurses. I earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from St. George’s University in 2016, graduating with honors, and spent the years that followed working in South Jersey in a variety of clinical settings. Along the way, I gained extensive experience in general practice, emergency coverage, and collaborative hospital environments, while also developing a deep appreciation for the emotional side of veterinary care.

Over time, I noticed a consistent gap in how care was delivered. Particularly for senior pets, anxious animals, and families facing complex end-of-life decisions. Clinic visits, while essential, can be stressful, overwhelming, and unfortunately under time constraints. I found the most meaningful moments happened not in exam rooms, but in the quiet, peaceful comfort of the pet parents home.

That realization ultimately led me to get certified in Palliative and Hospice Care and create Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet, a Miami-based mobile veterinary practice focused on delivering high-quality medical care in the comfort of a pet’s own home. My goal was to reduce pet/owner stress, make veterinary care easier to access, and to practice medicine in a way that prioritizes comfort, dignity, and the human-animal bond. Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet specializes in in-home wellness care, hospice and palliative support, pain management, and integrative therapies, allowing pets to receive care in the place where they feel safest.

Originally from the Philadelphia area, relocating to Miami in 2024 marked an exciting new chapter, both personally and professionally. Building Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet here has allowed me to serve a diverse, vibrant community while staying true to the values that brought me into veterinary medicine in the first place: empathy, trust, and connection. Today, I’m proud to run a practice that not only treats pets, but supports the people who care for them, meeting families where they are, literally and emotionally.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like most meaningful journeys, it hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to build something from the ground up while staying true to the kind of medicine I believe in. Transitioning from traditional clinic-based practice to running a fully independent mobile veterinary service required navigating logistics, regulations, business systems, and branding. Wearing the hats of veterinarian, business owner, marketer, receptionist, veterinary technician, and practice manager was overwhelming, but exciting at the same time.

Another challenge has been emotional rather than logistical. Providing hospice and palliative care means walking alongside families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Holding space for grief and complex decision-making takes intention and emotional resilience, especially when the care is delivered in such an intimate setting as a client’s home. Learning how to support caregivers while also protecting my own well-being has been an important part of the journey.

There have also been the realities that come with entrepreneurship including unexpected expenses, delayed payments, and the vulnerability that comes with stepping away from the security of established systems. Building trust in a new community, particularly after relocating to Miami, took time and patience.

One of the most important challenges I faced early on was learning how to set and maintain boundaries. When you genuinely care about your clients and their pets, it’s easy to feel like you need to be available at all times. In the beginning, that often meant taking calls every day and rarely giving myself time off. Over time, I learned that it’s ok to not take every phone call and allow myself time off from time to time. Protecting my time to rest and recharge allows me to show up more present, focused, and compassionate for both pets and their families.

That said, every challenge has reinforced why this work matters. Each obstacle pushed me to refine my approach, set clearer boundaries, and design a practice that reflects not just clinical excellence, but sustainability, compassion, and balance. The challenges didn’t deter me, they clarified my purpose and strengthened my commitment to practicing veterinary medicine in a way that truly serves pets and the people who love them.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet is a Miami-based mobile veterinary practice designed to bring high-quality, thoughtful care directly into a pet’s home. The practice was built around a simple but powerful idea that pets and the people who love them deserve care that feels unhurried, personalized, and compassionate. By eliminating the stress of clinic visits, Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet allows animals to be seen where they are most comfortable and in their own environment, which often leads to calmer exams, clearer communication, and integrated assessments.

Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet offers in-home wellness visits, sick visits, pain management, non-invasive therapies, and supportive care for pets at all stages of life, with a particular focus on senior pets, anxious animals, and families navigating chronic illness or end-of-life decisions. The practice also incorporates integrative approaches when appropriate, emphasizing comfort, quality of life, and individualized care plans rather than one-size-fits-all medicine.

What truly sets Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet apart is the intention behind every visit and the multitude of services offered. Appointments are designed to allow time for listening, education, and meaningful conversation. Care is never rushed, and families are encouraged to ask questions and be active participants in their pet’s care. Providing care in the home allows for a deeper understanding of a pet’s daily environment, mobility challenges, and routines, helping to inform more realistic and personalized treatment plans. Additionally, services such as laser therapy and acupuncture, often not available in many animal hospitals, can require frequent follow-up visits. Offering these therapies in-home makes ongoing care far more accessible, allowing pets to receive consistent treatment without the stress or inconvenience of repeated clinic visits.

What I want readers to know most is that Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet isn’t just about convenience, it’s about connection. It’s about meeting families where they are, honoring the human-animal bond, and practicing veterinary medicine in a way that prioritizes dignity, comfort, and empathy. Whether it’s a routine wellness visit or support during a difficult chapter, Comfy Pet the Mobile Vet is committed to providing care that feels as good as it is effective.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
One of the most important things I’ve learned is that you don’t need to have everything perfectly figured out before you begin. Clarity often comes from doing and not waiting. Starting before you feel fully ready allows you to learn, adapt, and grow in ways that planning alone never will.

I also wish I had understood earlier how essential boundaries are. Saying yes to everything can lead to burnout quickly, especially in a helping profession. Building something sustainable means protecting your time, your energy, and your values just as much as your business goals.

If I could sum it up, I’d say this: build intentionally and give yourself permission to evolve. The path won’t always be linear, but if it’s aligned with your values, it will be worth it.

Pricing:

  • In-home veterinary visits: Pricing reflects the convenience of mobile care, with visits typically starting higher than traditional clinic exams due to travel time and extended appointment lengths.
  • Services offered: Pricing reflects slightly lower price points than typical vet clinics as my overhead costs are significantly lower.
