Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathon Collazo.
Hi Jonathon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up my father was an electrician and involved in construction work as long as I can remember. I did not know my grandfather on my father’s side, but he was a stone mason. I have always felt a connection between satisfaction and working with my hands. I started Cutler Bay Wood and Steel to explore and harness the strengths of both wood and steel. Over the past few years I have made household items such as cutting boards and coffee tables as well as workbenches and decorative items. I would like to continue to challenge my skills by creating increasingly difficult pieces that people would want to have in their homes and show off to friends and family.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been both satisfying and challenging. I have spent many hours testing certain woodworking methods before creating pieces. I have also taken welding and blacksmithing classes to increase my knowledge in regard to metalworking.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create household items and decorative pieces that incorporate both wood and metal. I have created pieces that include Canadian white oak and Eastern Red Cedar. Some of the pieces have either welded or hand forged metal features incorporated as well. I like to have my customers give me an idea that they have for a piece and then turn that into reality with my hands.
What matters most to you? Why?
When I deliver the finished product, I want my customers expectations to be exceeded. I want my customers to feel like they are the only customer that I have.
