Rising Stars: Meet Wilmis Medrano of Cooper City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wilmis Medrano.

Hi Wilmis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey began quietly, behind the doors of my home, where fabric, patience, and persistence slowly stitched together a dream. What started as a home-based clothing alteration business grew, year after year, through steady hands and steady progress. Eventually, my husband and I felt the pull to take a leap of faith—to give the work a space of its own.

We set out with intention, searching for the right place, and were fortunate to find a storefront just steps from home. It felt meant to be—perfect in size, perfectly located, and arriving at a moment when our neighborhood was longing for quality alteration services. In February 2020, the doors officially opened. Almost immediately, customers walked in saying the same thing: “It was about time.” Their enthusiasm affirmed everything we believed.

From the beginning, my vision was different. I wanted the shop to feel less like a repair station and more like a boutique—elevated, welcoming, and refined. A place where craftsmanship mattered, where high-end service was the standard, and where every garment, from a simple hem to the most exquisite couture dress, would be treated with equal care and respect. My goal has always been simple: that every customer leaves completely satisfied, confident, and seen.

Just five weeks after opening, the world came to a halt. The pandemic forced our doors closed almost as soon as they had opened. With no safety net for a business so new, we absorbed the losses ourselves. It was devastating—but it was not the end. When Florida reopened later that year, we returned with renewed determination and an even deeper commitment to our craft and our community.

Today, the journey continues—with its challenges and its triumphs. The reception has been phenomenal, and our work has found its rhythm. We now specialize in couture alterations for wedding gowns and refined men’s tailoring, honoring garments that mark life’s most meaningful moments. Through it all, my purpose remains unchanged: to serve with excellence, integrity, and heart—one stitch at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

With no safety net for a business so new, we absorbed the losses ourselves. It was devastating—but it was not the end. Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work lives at the intersection of craftsmanship and care. I specialize in high-end clothing alterations, with a particular focus on couture bridal gowns and refined men’s tailoring. Every piece that comes through my doors—whether it’s a simple hem or an intricate, once-in-a-lifetime garment—is treated with the same level of respect, precision, and attention to detail.

What I am most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. Many arrive carrying garments that hold deep personal meaning: a wedding dress, a tailored suit, a piece meant for a milestone moment. Knowing they feel confident leaving those pieces in my hands is something I never take lightly. My goal is always to enhance the garment while preserving its integrity—so it feels as though it was always meant to fit that way.

What sets my work apart is the experience itself. I intentionally created a space that feels like a boutique rather than a traditional alteration shop—elevated, welcoming, and professional. I believe high-end service should be the standard, not the exception. From meticulous workmanship to one of the best warranties in the area, every detail is designed to reflect quality and care.

Ultimately, I am known for consistency, precision, and heart. I strive to ensure that every client leaves not just satisfied, but confident and celebrated. For me, alterations are not just about tailoring fabric—they are about honoring the moments people wear.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is sitting on the floor, completely absorbed in creating tiny dresses for my Barbie dolls. I treated them like couture pieces—imagining silhouettes, choosing colors, and carefully shaping fabric as if each doll were headed to a runway. Even then, I was telling stories through clothing.

I also remember designing dresses for myself, using fabric my mother would buy for me. Those moments felt magical—turning a simple piece of cloth into something personal and expressive. I didn’t know it at the time, but those early creations were the foundation of everything I do today. They taught me that clothing could be more than something you wear—it could be something you create, something that carries intention, imagination, and heart.
