Conversations with Yasmin Samuels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmin Samuels.

Hi Yasmin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey started over a decade ago with a simple love for hair, creativity, and helping people feel confident in themselves. I became a licensed cosmetologist in 2015 and spent my early years learning, observing, and refining my craft—especially in locs, which quickly became both my specialty and my passion.

Over time, I realized that my work went far beyond hair. My chair became a safe space—where people could rest, release, and be seen. As I grew personally, I also grew professionally, stepping out of the background and into leadership roles that allowed me to serve on a larger scale. From working one-on-one with clients in my suite to becoming Hair Director for major fashion shows, my path has been shaped by consistency, faith, and a deep respect for the art and community.

Today, my business reflects not only skill and experience, but intention. I focus on healthy hair, creative expression, and creating environments where both clients and collaborators feel supported. Every step—seen and unseen—has led me here, and I’m grateful for the journey and excited about what’s still ahead.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Like many entrepreneurs, my journey has been marked by seasons of uncertainty, exhaustion, and rebuilding—but layered with personal loss as well.

One of my biggest struggles has been motivation, especially during periods of burnout. Running a business that requires constant creativity and emotional presence can be draining, and there were times when simply showing up felt heavy. Social media added another layer of pressure—feeling the need to stay visible and consistent while navigating real life often felt overwhelming rather than inspiring.

Beyond business, I’ve also been grieving. I’m a widowed mother, raising a very active child involved in sports, and balancing motherhood, healing, and entrepreneurship hasn’t always been graceful or easy. There were seasons where survival came before ambition, and rest came before growth.

What carried me through was learning to give myself grace. I stopped measuring success by constant output and started honoring consistency, faith, and alignment instead. Those struggles reshaped how I lead, how I serve my clients, and how I define success today. They taught me that sustainability matters more than speed—and that building something meaningful sometimes requires slowing down.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At the core of my work, I’m a licensed cosmetologist specializing in loc care, styling, and overall hair health. I work one-on-one with my clients in a private suite, which allows me to provide intentional, personalized care rather than rushed services. I’m known for creating styles that not only look good, but support the long-term health and integrity of the hair.

In addition to styling, I also formulate and use hair products made with all-natural ingredients. Being mindful of what I put on my clients’ hair is extremely important to me—I believe healthy hair starts with clean, nourishing products that respect the scalp and the body as a whole.

What I’m most proud of is my tenacity and dedication. I’ve stayed committed to my craft through seasons of personal loss, burnout, and rebuilding, continuing to show up with integrity even when it wasn’t easy. That consistency—both in skill and in care—is something my clients feel and trust.

What sets me apart is the intention behind everything I do. My chair is a calm, grounding space, and my work is rooted in patience, honesty, and education. I don’t just create hairstyles—I help people maintain healthy hair, confidence, and a sense of being seen. That combination of skill, heart, and discipline is what defines my work and keeps my clients coming back.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
One thing I’d love to share is the importance of faith, focus, and consistency. God has been my anchor through every season—especially the ones that required patience more than progress. I’ve learned that when you stay focused, move with intention, and remain consistent even when results aren’t immediate, God honors that obedience. Trust the process, give yourself grace, and keep showing up. What’s meant for you will meet you in due time.
