Today we’d like to introduce you to Walter “J.R.” Brooks.
Hi Walter “J.R.”, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started like a lot of people in music do—curious, self-taught, and obsessed with figuring out how great records were made. I wasn’t handed a shortcut or a major cosign early on. What I had was consistency, a deep love for the craft, and the willingness to spend countless hours learning production, engineering, songwriting, and the business side at the same time.
Early in my career, I realized that talent alone wasn’t enough. I focused on mastering the technical side of audio while also building real relationships and delivering at a high level every time I was trusted with a project. That mindset led to opportunities with independent artists first, then larger platforms, bigger rooms, and more visibility. Each win opened the door to the next challenge.
As my career grew, I expanded beyond just making records. I built Diamond Sound Worldwide as a creative and business ecosystem—producing, mixing, mastering, consulting, and developing talent. I also stepped into entrepreneurship, real estate, and business consulting because I understood that long-term success comes from ownership, strategy, and leverage.
Today, I’m an award-winning producer and engineer, a business owner, and a consultant, but the foundation hasn’t changed. I still believe in discipline over hype, process over shortcuts, and impact over ego. Everything I’ve built is the result of staying locked in, betting on myself, and constantly evolving—creatively and professionally.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. The road has been anything but smooth.
There were long stretches where I was doing elite-level work without elite-level recognition or pay. Times when I had to invest in studios, equipment, and people before the return showed up—if it showed up at all. I dealt with inconsistent income, broken promises, politics in the industry, and situations where the work spoke louder than my name ever did.
One of the biggest struggles was learning that being great at your craft doesn’t automatically protect you. I had to learn contracts, negotiation, and boundaries the hard way. I also had to unlearn the idea that saying yes to everything was the path forward. Burnout was real, and so was the pressure of carrying not just my own vision, but the expectations of others who depended on me.
There were moments where quitting would’ve been the logical choice. But every setback forced me to sharpen my discipline, think more like an owner, and move with intention instead of emotion. The struggles didn’t slow me down—they refined me. They taught me how to build something sustainable, not just successful, and that’s what ultimately changed everything.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At my core, I’m a producer and mix engineer, but my work goes well beyond just making records sound good. I specialize in building complete records—sonically, creatively, and strategically. That means production, mixing, songwriting support, and helping artists and brands understand how their music fits into a bigger vision.
I’m known for delivering polished, competitive records that translate everywhere—from clubs and cars to film, TV, and streaming platforms—without sacrificing emotion or identity. Artists trust me because I can take a raw idea and turn it into something intentional and impactful, while still protecting their sound. I’m just as comfortable in high-pressure professional environments as I am developing independent talent from the ground up.
Through Diamond Sound Worldwide, I also consult and build systems—helping artists, creators, and entrepreneurs structure their businesses, monetize their skills, and move with clarity instead of chaos. That blend of creative excellence and business strategy is a big part of my reputation.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just awards or placements—it’s longevity and ownership. I’ve built a career that allows me to create at a high level, lead businesses, and open doors for others. What sets me apart is that I don’t just chase moments—I build foundations. I understand the craft, the culture, and the business, and I know how to connect all three in a way that lasts.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
There are a few clear ways people can work with me, collaborate, or support what I’m building.
Creatively, artists and brands can work with me through Diamond Sound Worldwide for music production, mixing, mastering, songwriting support, and select creative direction. I’m intentional about the projects I take on, so the best collaborations come from people who are serious about their craft and long-term vision.
Professionally, I work with entrepreneurs, creatives, and executives as a consultant—helping them build scalable systems, monetize their expertise, and move like owners. That includes one-on-one consulting, business strategy, and creative brand development.
Collaboratively, I’m always open to strategic partnerships—whether that’s with artists, producers, studios, brands, or platforms—when the alignment is right and there’s mutual value. I believe the best work comes from shared standards and clear intent.
Support can be as simple as engaging with the work—streaming and sharing projects, supporting releases, attending events, and amplifying the mission. I’m building for impact and longevity, and the people who support that vision are just as much a part of the journey as the ones in the room.
Everything starts with alignment. When the vision, work ethic, and standards match, the collaboration takes care of itself.
