Hi Jesus, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, I would hire myself.
Because DEFCON is built on real-life experience, not theory or trends. I’ve faced situations where personal safety truly mattered, and that has shaped how I think, prepare, and lead today.
I would hire myself because I don’t sell fear or unrealistic promises. I focus on awareness, responsibility, and practical solutions that people can actually use in real life. DEFCON is about mindset, prevention, and making smarter decisions every day.
If someone is looking for something superficial or just for show, then I wouldn’t be the right fit. DEFCON is honest, grounded, and designed for real people facing real situations.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jesús Moya, and I’m the founder of DEFCON SYSTEM. DEFCON SYSTEM is a Street-Based Self-Defense and personal safety project focused on real-world situations and everyday life.
A key part of DEFCON SYSTEM is our work with children and young people, where we address not only Self-Defense but also issues like bullying. We teach Discipline, Respect, Teamwork, and how to recognize, avoid, and properly respond to Bullying situations. Our goal is to help kids build confidence, awareness, and strong values that protect them both Physically and Emotionally.
For adults, DEFCON SYSTEM focuses on personal security, Self-Confidence, and Decision-Making in Real-Life environments. It’s about understanding risk, staying aware, and knowing how to move and act safely in the street without living in fear.
DEFCON SYSTEM is designed for everyone, regardless of age and gender. We adapt our Self-Defense approach to each individual, because street safety is not one-size-fits-all.
Originally born in Spain, DEFCON SYSTEM is now present in several countries and has been established in Miami for the past year, continuing to grow as an international Self-Defense and Personal Safety Community.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world tried to define me, I was a kid facing challenges that forced me to make adult decisions early on. Life wasn’t easy, but those experiences shaped my resilience, awareness, and sense of responsibility from a young age.
Even as a child, I felt a strong instinct to help and protect others. That drive naturally led me to work in protection before fully dedicating myself to DEFCON SYSTEM. I realized early on that I had something to offer—skills, focus, and determination to keep people safe.
DEFCON SYSTEM didn’t create who I am… it’s the continuation of the person I’ve always been. It reflects the lessons of my childhood: Discipline, Responsibility, Courage, and the desire to make a real difference in people’s lives.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
Yes. I miss the kind of family connection that not everyone gets to experience. Life has taught me just how precious those bonds are and how easily they can be taken for granted.
That’s why I place so much importance on true friendship, and loyalty. I’ve learned to value the people who are by my side, and to nurture the relationships that matter most. Above all, I treasure the person I share my life with, my wife, because having someone you can trust, love, and count on makes all the difference.
These lessons remind me every day to never take anyone for granted and to honor the connections that truly shape who we are.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the Self-Defense and personal safety industry is the idea that there’s a “magic system” that guarantees you’ll always be safe. Many people take advantage of society’s fears (whether it’s rising bullying, violence, or domestic issues) to sell seminars, programs, or quick-fix solutions.
This approach is dangerous because it gives people a false sense of security. Personal safety isn’t about tricks or shortcuts; it’s about awareness, mindset, preparation, and practical skills you can actually apply in real life. At DEFCON SYSTEM, we focus on realistic, responsible self-defense that respects the seriousness of protecting yourself and others, instead of selling illusions.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When have you had to bet the company?
There have been two key moments where I really had to bet everything on DEFCON SYSTEM. The first was when I was offered the opportunity to represent another system under a different name, using my own work, programs, and expertise. Essentially, I would have been responsible for someone else’s brand while building it with my effort. I turned it down because I couldn’t give away what I had created and stood for.
The second was a future proposition: I was offered a very generous deal that would have required me, after years of training instructors and opening branches, to step away entirely and leave the system and brand in the hands of others. I never accepted it, because I couldn’t compromise the integrity and vision of DEFCON SYSTEM.
Today, DEFCON SYSTEM is still mine and continues to grow. I’m not rich, but the brand, its values, and the work I’ve put into it remain intact, and that is what truly matters to me.
