Hidden Gems: Meet Joe Embres of Vero Beach Spirulina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Embres.

Hi Joe, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Joe Embres and I am the Founder, CEO, and the sole owner of Kyanos Farms, home of Vero Beach Spirulina. My Fresh Spirulina and my Freshly Frozen Spirulina Ice Blender Sticks are the only two products that I grow and distribute at Kyanos Farms. My team and I use the very best cutting-edge technology to grow the highest quality Spirulina anywhere. My Spirulina is grown, harvested, packaged, and shipped to all 50 States directly from my farm in Vero Beach Florida.

When I started the business in 2012, I set out to develop new methods to grow and harvest this amazing blue-green algae, a potential superfood of the future, and distribute it in raw form to their customers fresh from the farm. I started out by leasing a section of the Marine Lab at the Florida Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) in Vero Beach, Florida where numerous research projects were being conducted concerning the commercial raising of marine life. An important component of the project was growing algae to feed this marine life. This synergistic relationship with the F.I.T. Marine Lab allowed access to years of research, biologists and lab equipment. Eventually, I was able to develop new and novel methods to grow pristine algae.

Spirulina had already become a very popular food supplement generally recognized as a highly nutritional superfood, but it was sold mainly in powder or pill form consumed by millions around the world. Recognizing the value of fresh food in preserving nutritional value, I focused all of my energy on developing techniques to provide this superfood in fresh form – not cooked into a powder – and to implement these methods into commercial production of Spirulina.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have been delivering high quality Spirulina to local markets for over twelve years. With my company’s humble origins on the Vero Beach, Florida coast, we have since expanded to a 10-acre farm. Since inception, it has been the goal of Vero Beach Spirulina to create a Fresh Spirulina product and a Frozen Spirulina product that can be distributed at a reasonable price to markets all over the country.

My team and I at Vero Beach Spirulina look forward to being able to reach out to the community and provide health Spirulina snacks for children and serve our customers with the highest quality product possible. Superior product and quality customer experience is our standard!

The driving force behind our determination to perfect the Spirulina growing process has been our constantly increasing family of dedicated fresh algae consumers. Without the support, encouragement and dedication of these friends, we never would have been able to grow as we have in recent years. We are now enormously proud to provide this truly miraculous superfood to the masses. Like us, many are yearning to live in a more ecologically-minded and healthy world.

We’ve been impressed with Vero Beach Spirulina, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Spirulina is a biomass of blue-green algae that can be consumed by humans and animals. It is known to have been cultivated and harvested for centuries as far back as the 13th century. Interest in the research of spirulina as a modern day superfood as well as its potential applications in the vitamin, feed supplement and bio-fuels industries began in the 1960s-70s. Today we see large-scale commercial spirulina farms throughout the world that grow, harvest, and process Spirulina into a powdered form for consumption. It has even been used by NASA for astronauts on space missions to the Moon and Mars.

From the onset, it was discovered that fresh Spirulina in raw form did not have the unpleasant odor or taste that was associated with the powdered form. In fact, it was found to be virtually odorless and tasteless (though some people taste a pleasant ‘green’ or ‘spinach’ flavor). For many years prior, it was believed that Spirulina had to be dehydrated due to the fact that fresh Spirulina spoils rather quickly after harvest. After much experimentation my team developed new techniques that protected damage to the fragile spirulina trichrome during harvesting. We then developed processes to freeze this fresh whole Spirulina while still maintaining 95% of the nutritional value of raw Spirulina. Upon achieving success we introduced their first product, Freshly Frozen Spirulina Blender Sticks. Today, we also offer Fresh Spirulina and ship it nationwide to all 50 USA States.

Spirulina is a single-celled organism growing in an ever-expanding spiral, which is where the name Spirulina comes from. Its communities thrive in alkaline environments of both fresh and saltwater and feed on the sun’s light. Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria, which is a family of single-celled microbes that are often referred to as “blue-green algae”. Just like plants, cyanobacteria can produce energy from sunlight via photosynthesis. Spirulina is an excellent source of nutrition and it is well-known and well-regarded as a “superfood”.

Spirulina is made up of 60-70% complete protein – about twice the density of beef or fish. Fresh Spirulina is extraordinarily nutrient-dense. Its nutrients are super-concentrated and highly bioavailable, which means your body can absorb all these nutrients and put them to work.

Fresh Spirulina is rare to find. Most Spirulina growers focus on the dry, dehydrated form, which does not contain the high nutrient value of Fresh Spirulina. If you’re looking for a healthy, plant-based, nutrient-dense food—our Fresh Spirulina is the choice.

The nutrient bio-availability of Raw Live Fresh Spirulina is significant. When you desire the very purest form of Spirulina, then our Raw Live Spirulina is the finest nutrient-dense form to consume. Our Raw Live Spirulina is some of the most nutritional food that you can add to your diet. When you add a spoonful of Raw Live Fresh Spirulina to your diet, you will experience increased energy. The fresher – the better. The reason that Raw Live Fresh Spirulina is superior to powdered form is due to its nutrient-dense bio-availability.

There are many, many health benefits from Spirulina. New research is continually emerging that cite the latest findings emphasizing the nutritional value of Spirulina.

This blue-green algae is a freshwater plant that is now one of the most researched and most talked about superfoods today. Grown around the world from Mexico to Africa to the Hawaiian Islands, Spirulina is renowned for its flavor and even more powerful nutrition profile.

This algae, unlike most plants (which are about 90% indigestible cellulose) is completely digestible. Spirulina dissolves completely, delivering the nutrients directly to your body.

Fresh Spirulina is a potent source of whole, fresh, plant-based nutrients. Peer-reviewed research about Fresh Spirulina’s positive effect on human health conditions is notable science.

Fresh Spirulina can be added to almost any food or beverage. Simply add it to a glass of water, coconut water, or add it to your favorite green drink or smoothie. Our Fresh Spirulina is prized for being practically tasteless and odorless, so you don’t have to be concerned with altering the taste of your food or beverage.

You can make just about anything and add a little Fresh Spirulina to the mix. You’ll find that it not only blends well, but you can add it to your favorite recipes, too!
