Life & Work with Lana Tymchenko of Downtown Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lana Tymchenko.

Hi Lana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started photography in 2019 in NYC, but it didn’t last, because at that time I was trying to do tourist photography, and it was boring and I didn’t see how I could grow in it.. I didn’t know anything about the business and was struggling to get booked. I thought it’ was not for me and gave up. Then I decided to give it another shot right before the pandemic — obviously that didn’t end well either, because NYC suffered from it the most. I moved to Miami in summer 2020, and took a year to figure what and how I wanted to do. I accidentally got into fashion photography and community, and realized that this is the path I wanted to take. It became my true passion, I was willing to invest all my time and money in it. That’s how I hired a targeted ads specialist to help me promote, and as my portfolio was growing, I started getting reached out by professional signed models from the agencies like Elite, Next, Ford, Wilhelmina, etc. Working with them and including professional HMUAs and stylists in those projects, took my portfolio to another level, and that’s how my passion became my career. Brands and model agencies started booking me regularly, I posted actively about it on my socials — and that was attracting more and more clients for personal and professional shoots.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I first picked up the camera, I believed photography was a craft you can learn by experience. This mindset wasted a lot of my time, energy and money. Since then, I’ve learnt that receiving knowledge from other professionals and investing into classes and courses is the best thing you can do for your business and growing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a fashion and lifestyle photographer. I try to make every project look and feel intentional and elegant for everyone involved. My goal is to always deliver personalized result, because it’s very important for me that every client feels that their project represents their most true self.
