Inspiring Conversations with Gabriela Cabrera of Cabrera Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Cabrera.

Hi Gabriela , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After graduating with a degree in international affairs and economics, I stepped into a sales role, mostly because I wasn’t yet sure what direction I wanted my life to take. When COVID hit, everything paused, and like many people, I was given a lot of time and space to reflect. That period of stillness brought up deeper questions about purpose, fulfillment, and the kind of impact I wanted to have. It was during that time, as I began my own therapy journey, that I felt something shift. Being held, understood, and supported in such a meaningful way opened a path I hadn’t previously considered.

When the world reopened, I felt called to pursue something more aligned with that sense of purpose. I decided to go back to school and study psychology, with the hope of offering others the same kind of support that had meant so much to me. Almost five years later, I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and I now have the privilege of working alongside my grandmother, who has been a psychotherapist in our community for decades.

I’m incredibly grateful for the people, experiences, and moments (both challenging and grounding) that brought me to this work. It’s been a path shaped by curiosity, care, and a desire to help others feel more connected to themselves, and I’m honored to be able to do this every day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most meaningful paths, it hasn’t been completely smooth. The internship and licensure process can be intense, humbling, and at times pretty overwhelming. There’s a lot of emotional labor involved in learning how to support others while still growing yourself, and the long hours, supervision requirements, and constant self-reflection can take a toll.

But I’m incredibly grateful for the community and mentorship that held me through it. I had supervisors, peers, and family members who believed in me, guided me, and reminded me why this work mattered when things felt heavy. Those relationships made the difficult moments feel manageable and helped me grow into the therapist I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My practice is rooted in creating a grounded, compassionate space for children, teens, and adults to explore their inner world and strengthen their emotional well-being. I specialize in anxiety, depression, ADHD, life transitions, relational patterns, and emotional regulation. I also work closely with young adults navigating identity, adjustment, and the challenges that come with growing into themselves. My approach integrates evidence-based practices, somatic awareness, and mindfulness in a way that feels steady, accessible, and deeply human.

What sets my work apart is the emphasis on slowing down and helping clients reconnect with themselves. I am not a quick-fix therapist. I am intentional about honoring each person’s pace and creating a space where they feel understood, seen, and supported. I also bring a multigenerational perspective to my work, as I practice alongside my grandmother, who has been a psychotherapist in our community for decades. Her presence, wisdom, and legacy have shaped not only how I approach therapy but also the values that guide my practice.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of the sense of safety and authenticity that people feel when they work with me. Whether sessions are in-person or virtual, I focus on creating an environment where clients can tune into themselves and build the inner tools needed to move through life with more steadiness and clarity.

For readers wanting to know more, my offerings include individual therapy for children, teens, and adults, as well as couples and family counseling. I accept insurance and offer both in-person and virtual appointments to make care as accessible as possible. My hope is that anyone who walks into my space, or screens into it, feels grounded, supported, and invited to grow in a way that feels aligned with who they truly are.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has shown up in my life in the form of people. I have been incredibly fortunate to have a close family member in the field who has guided me, encouraged me, and helped me understand the heart of this work from the very beginning. That kind of support is a privilege, and I never take it for granted.

I have also been blessed with a strong community of fellow therapists and mentors who have shaped my growth. Their wisdom, honesty, and encouragement have carried me through the harder parts of training and helped me build a practice that feels aligned with my values. While hard work and intention have definitely played a role in where I am today, I recognize that the people around me have been an essential part of the journey.
