Life & Work with Romina Erminy of South Miami, FL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Romina Erminy.

Hi Romina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story really begins when I was very young. I grew up surrounded by art in every shape or form, and creativity quickly became my favorite form of expression. I was that kid who built dream homes out of cardboard and saved every “treasure” material because I was convinced it was destined for a model or sketch. Even then, I knew design and architecture were more than interests, they were part of who I was.

That passion became more structured when I attended DASH (Design and Architecture Senior High) in Miami’s Design District. It was there that I truly found my voice as a designer, discovering my own taste, character, and eye for design. I later studied Set Design in Milan, which opened my world even more, lighting, materials, mechanisms, storytelling through space, everything clicked.

As I moved into architecture school at MDC and UM, I began working with a construction company and in interior design. Those years were pivotal. I learned things no classroom could ever teach. Eventually, I opened my interior design studio, Tu y Yo Design. It never felt like “starting a business”, it felt like stepping fully into what I was meant to do. When you genuinely love something, the work becomes enjoyable, and I think that shows in my projects.

Interior design, for me, isn’t just selecting finishes (and it is certainly not picking furniture, which is often confused with interior decorating). It’s being on job sites, coordinating with contractors, understanding technical systems, maintaining an eye for detail and a high standard of quality, managing timelines, and always advocating for the people who will live in the space. It’s technical, creative, and deeply human.

And that variety, the mix of creativity and technicality, is what I love most. It’s what has shaped my story and continues to drive the work I do today. It actually goes beyond that: the personal side of this profession is incredibly meaningful to me. I design spaces where families will grow, where people will spend everyday moments, and where memories will be made. That sense of impact is truly special and fulfilling, and no other role could give me that.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, at least not in the traditional sense. Managing a business while completing an architecture degree has been a real balancing act, and adding a personal life into the mix only makes the equation more complex. But for me, these challenges have always come with a sense of purpose.

When people ask me how I do it, or what studying design or architecture is like, I’m very honest: it’s demanding, it’s long hours, and it stretches you in every direction. But if you genuinely love what you do, it doesn’t feel impossible. You actually enjoy the problem-solving, the late nights, the meticulous details, every inch of the process becomes part of the joy.

So, I guess it depends on the perspective you look at it from. Yes, it has been challenging, especially trying to grow my client reach and connect with more people who can discover my work, but at the same time, it has been some of the most meaningful, fulfilling, and transformative years of my career and my life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I aim to create spaces where every inch has a purpose and a little soul, too. I love for every space to have a character of its own and be intentionally crafted for the people. I started with small renovations, then moved into full home makeovers, and now I’m designing entire new-construction homes.

My clients often tell me their homes feel “like them, but better,” which is exactly the goal. I aim to capture my client’s unique personalities and needs in a much elevated way. Often designing for them in ways they didn’t even know was going to make their every day life easier, and make the spaces work for them and not the other way around. I’m proud that people trust me with spaces where they’ll live their everyday life, celebrate milestones, and create memories. That’s the heart of my work.

What sets me apart is the mix of creativity and technical eye I bring to every project. Contractors know me by now, I truly have a technical eye for detail, a 1/2″ off measurements does not escape my eye, and I am often known as the blue tape queen. I do strive for a high level of quality work.

At the end of the day, I design with intention, warmth, and a lot of care. My goal is simple: to create spaces that make people feel at home the moment they walk in.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see my company growing into a full architecture and interior design studio, eventually expanding into design-build. I think the industry is moving toward more integrated, seamless services, where clients rely on one trusted team from concept to construction completion. My goal is for clients to come to us knowing they can breathe a little easier, we’ll handle everything, minimize the stress, and deliver a beautiful, thoughtful project from start to finish.
