Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Tabers.
Hi Michael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Neptune Memorial Reef is the largest man-made reef on earth and thrives in just 40 feet of clear water. This extraordinary reef is a resting place for those who choose cremation and wish to be memorialized in a unique underwater setting. Construction began in the summer of 2007 with the first phase, followed by deployment of the second phase in 2018.
Once complete the reef will sprawl 16 acres of the ocean floor, providing a beautiful and lasting resting place for more than 250,000 individuals.
This wonderous & inspiring destination has quickly become popular amid ocean enthusiasts and environmentalists around the world. Scuba divers, boaters, marine biologists, fishermen and travelers who have a deep love for the ocean must visit this undersea tribute to life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The permitting process to construct the Reef took five years, beginning in 2002. Once secured, construction started in 2007.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our mission has been to create a thriving new reef system where there was once barren ocean floor in dire need of marine life. The goal was to create an exquisite dive destination while celebrating and remembering the human spirit.
During the planning process, the idea of constructing Neptune Memorial Reef in the image of the “Lost City of Atlantis” originated. Our coral reef is not only protecting our planet’s marine ecosystem, but a true work of art.
Incorporating cremated remains into placements was recognized as a way to provide a unique final resting place for those who loved the ocean and cared for the environment. The art speaks to our desire to nurture the ocean, and “create life, after life”.
Our concept is unique. Neptune Memorial Reef brings a new dimension to this connection by offering a permanent place in the ocean. And it goes a step further by creating and sustaining marine life, thereby allowing a person to contribute to the environment.
What matters most to you? Why?
Our team is committed to ensuring families choosing cremation know all their options. Although individuals may have decided on cremation at their time of passing, many have not considered what will be done with their ashes once that process is complete. It is important to make that decision in advance and ensure it is documented.
Families are selecting cremation more than ever. Following cremation, it is important to establish a permanent place of remembrance so loved ones and future generations have a beautiful place to visit and reflect.
