Dahlia Canes shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Dahlia, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’ve been walking a path since birth. It’s a learning and growing, an insightfull path that your given destiny provides. However, along this path you have a choice to follow it or wander off into never never land. Most of us have a calling and then others…well… As for me, my calling was obvious. Since I was a little girl it’s been animals and defending what I saw wrong. Discrimination of any sort, of any species, including humans, especially by repeated disagreeable acts, just rubbed me the wrong way. I have fought for Women’s rights, Gay rights, and Animal rights. Presently and for the rest of my life, I shall follow this calling as I am lucky to do so.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the Director and Founder for the “Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Coalition (MCABSL). We’ve been around for decades and it’s origin is based out of Miami-Dade County, Florida. However, thru the years it has become a recognized and respected non-profit organization worldwide. We fight BSL, animal cruelty, political discrepencies, dog fighting and champion that all dogs, of any breed, are individuals and must be addressed as such. The only dangerous animals here are “some” humans.
We have previously shown our film” Chasing Chocolate” at numerous locations. It is a full lenght film dealing with all the above mentioned issues head on. Our next showing is to be set, so stay tuned. There is never any charge for this and it is mostly RSVP. We are at the crossroads of an animal epidemic were dumping of animals, cruelty and ineffectual legislations are presently growing. We must rise and meet our calling. This film brings awareness and is one hell of an educationsl tool. Let’s Do This!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Ha! That’s an easy one… my dogs and animals thru my life time. They conveyed all the dignity, the unconditional love which by being human it is remotely impossible to attain, and the strength and courage to face obstacles. I owe them who I am today.
Then there was one brilliant person in particular who formed me in my early childhood years and continued to do so till her last days…she was my Maternal Grandmother Emilia, a very proud Spaniard with full accent and could cook like no one I’ve seen to this day! I thank her for her guidance and yes, unconditional l0ve.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Numerous times, but always there was some sort of divine intervention sent by whowever is directing us at this point in time, and I continued my calling and path, with more determination and insight than before. “Never Give Up” seems to be my calling card.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Hands down… Dr. Jane Goodall. Always have and always will. A hell of a mentor! You do not need power to make changes in this world. Real beneficial and humane changes come thru your character and spiritual connection with others.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Nothing at all, I would be doing exactly what I’m doing now. Perhaps maybe slowing down drinking so much Coca-Cola? Lololol…
