Dr. Annette BoVee-Akyurek shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Annette, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
These are all great qualities. I’d like to talk briefly about all three.
Intelligence, to me, is not just what you get on an IQ test, but your awareness and understanding about several aspects of the world. Logical awareness, emotional intelligence, and your ability to maneuver around one’s surroundings are primary.
Energy has several meanings: What is an individual’s energy? Describing one’s demeanor, their “vibe,” a bit of how one feels around the individual. Energy work describes various healing practices that utilize “energy” to provide some kind of healing or change; but remember, everything is “energy.” And lastly, “energy” can be used to describe sources of fuel, i.e. gas, steam, wind, water, and electric.
Integrity is one’s authentic being, a way of moving throughout the world with the mindset of being kind, caring, and “real” with others.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an integrative psychotherapist and physical therapist working with clients to enhance overall wellness of mind and body. I believe that we all have an internal awareness and an ability to work towards healing and joy, and at times we may benefit from assistance to facilitate our process in our journey. I utilize a relational and integrative perspective with individuals with psychosocial-emotional or physical challenges, and work collaboratively with the client towards wellness.
I am a Florida licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and licensed mental health counselor (LMHC), national certified counselor (NCC), and licensed physical therapist (PT). I am a certified hypnotherapist, advanced level craniosacral therapist/somatic clinician, EMDRIA certified EMDR clinician, and an Access Consciousness/Bars provider.
I utilize a variety of therapy approaches that best fit individuals in their healing process(s), and attend to the client’s unique needs. I also provide lectures and discussions on mind and body specialty topics in the areas of psychotherapy, physical therapy, and wellness; I am a conference presenter, clinical supervisor, program developer, and writer, and have provided adjunct professor classes.
I utilize a mind and body integrative approach to enhance overall wellness as a psychotherapist and physical therapist in assisting individuals. I see the mind and body as a whole embracing a variety of factors that contribute to the client’s present state, with less attention to diagnostic labels. The mind and body is an interrelated system within itself and its ecosystem.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I have been traveling to Europe since I was a young child. My mother being German, allowed for several trips to Germany, among other countries. I lived and worked in Germany for 6 months, and then lived, worked and taught various mind and body wellness classes in Istanbul, Turkey for 14 years. I feel living and working in other cultures opened my mind, allowing for a broad perspective in my life and in my work.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I never give up, but this can sometimes be a burden as well. Once I have a goal, I will do what it takes to continue forward, Yes, this has allowed for success, but also can be a bit tiring at times.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Authenticity, truth, kindness, love, and close connect with others. In addition, working in a field that really inspires me, and trying new things.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
Living in a small village among nature, animals, and kind people.
