Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra.
Hi Alejandra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been doing international trade and development work for 20+ years, working in the formulation of regional policies for sustainable development at multilateral organizations like the Organization of American States, and supporting international trade and exports working for the U.S. Department of Commerce and most recently helping Florida small and medium companies expand their business abroad as a Director for International Trade and Development at SelectFlorida.
About three years ago, I joined the board of the South Florida chapter of the Organization of Women in International Trade (OWIT) as I truly believe in the power of supporting women’s advancement in international trade through networking and collaboration. This group of women inspired me to take over the chapter’s leadership a year ago, with the clear objective of putting our organization back on the spotlight after dealing with the consequences and f the pandemic.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a walk in the park for sure, but we have an amazing board that brings perspective, fresh ideas and commitment. We also have a wonderful team of interns that just like us volunteers their time to help us with our mission. Having a team that “gets it” and shares my passion and vision keeps me focused.
The most recent challenge came during the COVID pandemic. We lost an important number of members and are currently rebuilding our membership base. We are doing this by offering high quality and relevant events to help our members with their professional and personal development.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an accomplished professional with over 20 years of experience in international development, government affairs, and international trade. My career includes leadership roles at prominent organizations such as SelectFlorida, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the U.S. Department of Commerce. In these positions, I have spearheaded initiatives aimed at promoting economic growth, strengthening public-private partnerships, and advocating for policies that enhance international business opportunities.
I have a proven track record of managing complex, multi-country projects while engaging with government officials, policymakers, and key stakeholders to advance sustainable economic development goals. My expertise encompasses strategic government relations, policy advocacy, trade management, and facilitating international partnerships that support small and medium-sized enterprises.
As a strategic and diplomatic communicator, I excel in navigating complex political, cultural, and economic landscapes.
Overall I think my multicultural background allows me to integrate diverse perspectives into cohesive and effective initiatives.
I feel very proud of the work I did as the Colombia Director for Atlas Service Corps, a thriving international nonprofit that seeks the exchange of best practices and ideas within the nonprofit sector. I was the director of its first international office, and was in charge of its establishment in Colombia, including its legal incorporation, fundraising and building relationships with different stakeholders locally. It was a challenge and experience that I enjoyed very much. I was part of something new and different that was committed to help implement a “think global, act local” mindset by facilitating that exchange of perspectives and experiences for a more effective implementation of social projects and initiatives
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We welcome those that believe that the advancement of international trade benefits our community. People can donate their time, funding, expertise and other resources such as venues, marketing materials, etc. We are open to new ideas and would love to hear them! OWIT SFL is a space where ideas are heard, relevant conversations are happening and all contributions are valued!
