Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Odom.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Nearly 20 years ago, I started my career in sales and marketing for a major railroad company. After completing a nine-month rotational program, the recession hit and I was reassigned to oversee accounts payable for a subsidiary. At the time it felt like a setback, but it turned out to be the setup I needed. That role is where I learned how to rebuild systems, streamline processes, and manage financial operations on a large scale.
From there, I became a true student—and eventually a master—of process improvement. In 2018, I stepped into entrepreneurship, supporting service based businesses with advisory services and outsourced accounting.
By 2024, I knew I wanted to expand the impact of my work, so I launched Books by Axis. Today, we provide CFO advisory, outsourced accounting, and bookkeeping support—but more importantly, we help founders of service-based businesses and nonprofits actually know their numbers. Our mission is to empower leaders to make decisions with clarity, confidence, and data at the forefront.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—entrepreneurship rarely is. I’ve learned so much along the way, and learning usually comes with bumps. They say if you want to learn how to trust God, become an entrepreneur, and I’ve found that to be true. Every challenge has stretched me, refined me, and ultimately made my business stronger.
I’ve come to see that every challenge is an opportunity to revisit a business process, tighten it, or reimagine it entirely. Those obstacles have pushed me to build an airtight onboarding process, deliver more personalized client service, and create experiences that lead to long-standing, returning clients. Mistakes have become learning opportunities, and the challenges have become the backbone of a more efficient, resilient business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Books by Axis?
Books by Axis is a boutique financial management firm built for service-based businesses and nonprofits that want clarity, confidence, and control over their numbers. We provide Fractional CFO advisory, outsourced accounting, and bookkeeping support—but our real specialty is helping founders make decisions rooted in facts and data, not guesswork.
We exclusively use QuickBooks Online and integrate all your systems within it, allowing the full power of QuickBooks to run in the background. This gives our clients accurate, real-time financial data while we guide them on how to use that information to set goals, reinvest in their business, pay themselves appropriately, and focus on the parts of their business that solve the world’s big problems.
What sets us apart is our boutique, high-touch approach: every client receives personalized service, and every engagement is designed to streamline workflows, integrate systems, and make the financial engine of the business run efficiently. Accuracy, strategy, and actionable insights are at the core of everything we do.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust we’ve built. Our clients stay with us for years because they know we deliver clarity, transparency, and guidance that transforms their numbers into a roadmap for growth. At Books by Axis, numbers aren’t just compliance—they’re a tool for impact.
What I want readers to know is you don’t have to guess your way through your financials. With the right guidance, systems, and insights, you can make confident, data-driven decisions—and that’s exactly what we’re here to help you do.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that while making money is always a top goal, the most successful business owners are driven by a bigger “why.” For me, my why is using my skills to help others succeed. I love seeing clients freed from back-office, non-revenue-generating activities so they can focus on the work that truly grows their business. When I can streamline their processes and guide them with clarity, it’s incredibly rewarding to watch them dive deeper into the parts of their business that make the biggest impact.
