Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Chang.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been in professional dance all my life – since I was 3, I was in ballet, tap, jazz… and soon thereafter, I became a pointe ballerina and added other dance styles to my repertoire, from hip hop / modern to Caribbean. Dance is a way of life, and it helped me all through my years to deal with the stress of growing up. Moreover, it kept me healthy, fit, and good-natured. Realizing that, in 2012, I decided to start my own fitness brand – to help others through dance, the same way it helped me. ReggaeFit was born. And over a decade later, continues to help people of all ages and walks of life to be fit, gain self-confidence, lose their inhibition, and HAVE FUN. More recently, we became a non-profit organization, and it is my intention to help those as much as possible for years to come.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Unfortunately not, but I’m ok with that because it’s been a learning experience to 1) start my own business, but also 2) to build a brand from scratch that people actually take seriously! Having gone through the trials and tribulations has certainly made it all more worth it to see and hear how ReggaeFit (my brain child) has helped people and become a part of their lives. It hasn’t been easy staying relevant at the forefront of the ever-evolving fitness/dance industry, and getting and keeping clients, and boy, has my pocket felt it. But my heart has felt it more and and any tears of woe I shed trying to keep ReggaeFit alive have turned to tears of joy.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
ReggaeFit is an innovation in fitness that blends Caribbean dance moves with high energy aerobics. We teach all ages, from kids to seniors, and base our classes around what each age group needs most. Our kids classes delve into an understanding of music, rhythm and culture while having fun learning dance moves; our teens classes are geared around choreography and fostering creativity in making new routines, while our seniors sessions are all about movement in a safe way. Feedback from our adults classes like “I’ve been off my high blood pressure medication from just two weeks of ReggaeFit” and “Please don’t ever stop offering ReggaeFit, because its a part of my life” make me the most proud, knowing that my company is truly helping people and is as special to them as it is to me.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That I enjoy just being home with my family or snuggled up reading a good book. Oh and that I love scary movies, lol.
