Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles.
Hi Charles, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I came to South Florida as young man ready to use my talents as welder in doing more than just soldering computer parts in some factory in New England. The weather, beaches, and fishing made every weekend worth the work week. After spending a couple of years working on boats with a local mast company, I decided to open my own shop catering to the needs of the yachting and marine industry. I was, after all, in the Venice of the Americas. Thirty-three years later, I still love what I do and enjoy the people I meet every day. Everyone in the yachting world has an interesting story, and every boat is unique. In all my years in business I’ve never had two days the same.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any business, you have your good days and your bad, busy seasons, and times you’ve got to tighten the belt. But life would be boring if it was all the same every day. I count my blessings and when I look back I can honestly tell you that owning my own business here in South Florida has been amazing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Like I said, no two days have been the same. Mainly because no two jobs are the same. CJM Custom Shop is not just a name. It is the manifestation of the life I wanted to live. I get to use my skills to create, repair and even recreate both beautiful and functional works of art in stainless and aluminum. It makes me proud to hear my work referred to as yacht jewelry. or when I’m appreciated for my ability to recreate parts, portals, and products from the past.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I cannot thank my wife enough for handling the business administration so that I can concentrate on my work. You know, the stuff that keeps customers coming back year after year.
I’ve known some of the boats and their captains for more than thirty years. In the grand scheme of things, the marine industry is small. For thirty years I’ve depended solely upon word of mouth to keep me afloat, so in a way, Fort Lauderdale and the yachting community are the very best cheerleaders.
