Today we’d like to introduce you to Alec Sepy.
Alec, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
MBI has been in the business of art handling for over 20 years. I’ve worked with the company since 2010, my start was assisting with gallery installations at Art Basel in Miami Beach. Even though, I’m just an worker bee, I treat MBI as if it was my own. This company has always been there for me when I needed it and I work my hardest to return the gesture. Chris Ingalls, the current owner, took over the company from her brother, Mason Boyington Ingalls (hence the name MBI). She was a gallerist for many years and now owns her own art appraisal business, as well as, taking care of this company as well. Richard Almstetter is the general manager who’s been apart of the company since the beginning. He’s a German native and is the best at what he does. He’s been taking care of the day-to-day at MBI since the beginning and the company would be nothing without him. His attention to detail is what separate’s him from the rest, as well as, being one of the most highly skilled craftsmen in South Florida. When something goes wrong or is in need of a special touch, there’s nobody trusted more than him.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As long as I’ve been apart of this company, I can’t name a single complaint. We work hard and there’s nothing we haven’t been able to figure out. That’s probably the best skill an art handler can have, which is to improvise!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Since I’ve started working here, my skills in working and talking with people have changed in a big way. My favorite part and my specialty in this company are the installations we do. There’s nothing more gratifying than spending time to hang up artwork or install sculptures in their new spaces. It makes the client’s happy and it makes me feel great that I can bring them that joy with my talent. It’s not always super complicated, but what I do isn’t always so easily done by the average contractor. It takes a special eye to find a way to improve a space with someone’s art, I’m proud and feel privileged that I get to be the one who people count on for that.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Like I said earlier, improvising is more than half of the job. If you’re starting out, just make sure you practice awareness. That’s what will separate you from others.
