Life & Work with Robertha Haddad Blatt of Coral Gables

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robertha Haddad Blatt.

Hi Robertha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Miami three years ago to pursue a Master’s in Arts and Photography at Barry University, where I’m currently in my second year. I’m also part of the Red Thread Studio artist collective in Coral Gables. I’m a psychologist by training, with a specialization in couples and group therapy. Since 2003, I’ve developed a clinical practice that gradually evolved into a hybrid space between therapeutic listening and artistic creation. Over time, my office transformed into an “atelier-therapy” studio, where children, adolescents, and families could create together. This transition opened the path to an expanded artistic practice, deeply connected to care, attentive presence, and aesthetic experience. My journey brings together art, psychology, and education in an organic way—always aiming to create sensitive spaces for expression, listening, and transformation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My first major challenge happened in Brazil, when I proposed my first artistic project. Coming from a psychology background, I faced the difficulty of explaining a practice that merged therapeutic processes with artistic creation—something not widely understood at the time. I received a grant that required me to translate this proposal into the visual arts field, which meant seeking sponsorship, organizing exhibitions, and opening the work to the public. The challenge was to make something deeply intuitive and innovative visible and accessible—born from the desire to integrate therapeutic listening with symbolic and artistic expression, what I now realize is that it was fortunately accomplished successfully, as it is a project I am proud of.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In constant dialogue with my role as an educator and psychologist for over two decades, I delve into the convergence of therapeutic practices and artistic expressions where presence and encounter are guiding principles for sensitizing the potentialities of bodies engaging with spaces, experiences and sensory materialities.
The collective nature of my work surpasses a mere engagement with the finished pieces; rather, it emanates from the very conception of the artistic propositions, grounded in the dynamic exchange between individuals, institutions, communities, public spaces, artists and other pivotal cultural agents.
Characterized by relational, installative and durational attributes, my artistic practice extends beyond the conventional artist’s role: it encompasses endeavors such as organizing collective and itinerant exhibitions, interfacing with museum collections, devising educational initiatives, promoting roundtable discussions, mobilizing local communities, and collaboratively activating participatory works – events that can only unfold if conjugated in the first person singular and plural, simultaneously.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Trust your intuition and work hard, dedicating yourself fully. Make the most of opportunities that shows and create your own, pursuing learning and achievement. No one will do it for you, no one will show you the way, and there’s no recipe, it’s only trial and error.
