Anne Morrissey’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Anne Morrissey. Check out our conversation below.

Anne, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m building digital products. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, but there was too much technology for me to make progress. Now they are about ready to launch. I started with products for men who are getting overlooked in the dating world and want to get noticed in a crowded world.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been running my business Morrissey Style Consulting for almost twenty years now, and here’s what I’ve figured out – most people are absolutely terrified of their own closets.

I mean, think about it. You’ve got executives making million-dollar decisions all day long, but put them in front of a mirror trying to pick an outfit? Total deer-in-headlights moment. And don’t even get me started on people going through divorces or career changes – they’re basically starting over and have no clue where to begin.

So I created this 5-step system that takes all that confusion and turns it into actual confidence. We work together – sometimes in person, sometimes online – and by the time we’re done, you’ve got a complete lookbook of photographed outfits. No more standing in your closet at 7 AM having a mini breakdown.

That’s what I do – I help people stop hiding behind their clothes and start showing up as themselves. Because when you feel good in what you’re wearing, everything else just clicks.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks the bonds between people is a lack of communication. People get all in their heads about what others are thinking and doing, but they don’t talk about it.

People make assumptions and then act on those assumptions and they could be totally wrong. Without honest communication, which is not always easy, things can go sideways.

The good part is that communication can also restore bonds and relationships between people – if they both want to restore the bond. If one peoson doesn’t want to restore it, no amount of communications is going to restore it. Just gotta move on.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
I recently changed my mind about social media. I used to ignore it. I would consume it, mostly Instagram, but posting myself was not my thing. Now with stepping into the new role of digital creator along with being a Personal Stylist, I’ve decided to get over it and I created a posting strategy. It’s much easier with a strategy – just like you need a shopping strategy or you end up buying random stuff that doesn’t go together. Same with social, I have a plan now. Let’s see how it goes. I have a lot to say, and I’m going to share it!

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the fashion industry does not understand people. They seem to think people want outlandishly expensive and weird clothing, when that has not played out in my experience.

People just want to look good. They don’t want to scream “look at me”. They just want to get dressed and know they are pulled together. The Fashion Industry makes that incredibly difficult for people because they are always throwing out conflicting information and showing their products on really young and skinny and tall people who don’t represent the population. People get confused when they see fashions they can’t relate to.

The lie the fashion industry tells itself is that people understand what they are producing. They don’t understand, and so people just wear the same things over and over because it’s too much effort to sort through whatever is supposed to be in style this season…

They have made an effort to improve, but they still have a LONG way to go.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
Thats’ easy. When I have to deal with too much technology as I’m creating something. Anything with spreadsheets and numbers that I’m supposed to figure out. I will start to get this shut down feeling. I’m not interested in figuring it out, I just want it done. And the other thing that happens is I start thinking how will I know I’m getting it right?

If I feel like I have to put maximum effort into something I don’t understand, and I cannot trust the result. I’m out of my depth and I reach out for help!
