An Inspired Chat with Kate Engelmeyer of West Palm Beach

We recently had the chance to connect with Kate Engelmeyer and have shared our conversation below.

Kate, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Whenever I am writing a new song, I tend to get really focused and lose track of time. It’s during those moments that I feel like my true self. Songwriting is a cathartic experience for me and almost always happens spontaneously, whenever I’m feeling a lot of emotions. I use the songwriting process to sort through what I’m feeling and turn it into something beautiful.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and musician originally from Pensacola, Florida. Since moving to South Florida in 2022, I have performed all over the region, from the Florida Keys to Palm Beach County. As a freelance musician, I play live music at local businesses and provide music for private events. I enjoy singing my own renditions of songs from a variety of genres and accompanying myself on guitar and ukulele. Additionally, I love to share my original music whenever I can. My new EP “Questions” was recently released on streaming platforms and it features 6 original songs. As a multi-instrumentalist, the EP was really fun to record! I sang and played most of the instruments, including acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, piano, violin, mandolin, and banjo.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with God from an early age had the biggest impact on how I see myself. Growing up, I was very introverted and didn’t have many friends, especially throughout middle and high school. Because my confidence came from God, I knew that fitting in and being popular didn’t matter that much anyway. I understood early on that the superficial things in life aren’t all that important. The greatest joy in my life has always come from using the things I’m passionate about to do something purposeful and positive.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
When I was sad or upset growing up, songwriting helped me. I started writing songs when I was 13 years old and quickly realized that songwriting allows me to express things that I couldn’t otherwise express. During some of the difficult times of my teenage years, I coped by writing songs. Songwriting is my therapy still to this day. Whenever I’m feeling really sad or upset, getting my feelings down on paper and creating a song is the only thing that truly makes me feel better.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of me is the real me. I’m a very honest person and I can’t pretend to be someone I’m not. I try to present myself in the most authentic way possible, from the way I look to how I sound. I always want to stay true to myself and never compromise on my values.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I am doing what I was born to do, not what I was told to do. When I discovered my passion for music in middle school, I realized that it was something I had to devote myself to and I never wavered from that. Once I made that choice, there was really no going back! I’m thankful for my parents because they have been so supportive during my musical journey and never tried to talk me into pursuing something else.
