Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Moton-Ray.
Hi Erika, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began with a deep passion for dance and a desire to create a positive space where young dancers could grow in both skill and confidence. After years of dancing and teaching, I decided to take a leap of faith and open Erika Kay Star Dance Academy in Miramar, Florida. Starting out wasn’t easy I faced the usual challenges of building a business from the ground up but my love for dance and my commitment to my students kept me going.
Over the years, my academy has grown into a family-oriented space where dancers of all ages can express themselves through movement and discover their potential. We’ve performed at major events, competed successfully, and most importantly, built a strong community that celebrates discipline, teamwork, and self-expression.
I’m proud of how far we’ve come, from a small vision to a thriving academy now celebrating over five years in operation. Every step of this journey has been about inspiring the next generation to dream big, work hard, and shine bright both on and off the stage.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped me into the woman and leader I am today. Starting and running a dance academy takes a lot of dedication, patience, and faith. There were times when I faced financial setbacks, times when enrollment was low, and moments when I had to juggle being a wife, a mother, and a business owner all at once. Lord knows it is hard to find a balance.
One of the biggest challenges was learning how to balance it all managing a team, keeping parents happy, motivating students, and still finding time for myself and my family. But through it all, I’ve learned that consistency, prayer, and passion are what keep things moving forward.
The struggles taught me resilience. They reminded me why I started to build a space where kids could believe in themselves, stay disciplined, and find joy through dance. Looking back, the road may not have been easy, but it’s been worth every step. When I walk into my dance studio to see the smiles on the dancers faces is worth everything.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Erika Kay Star Dance Academy, I specialize in developing well-rounded dancers by focusing not only on technique but also on confidence, discipline, and self-expression. We offer classes in contemporary, ballet, majorette, hip-hop, jazz, tap and tumbling for ages 3 to 18. My goal is to create a space where every dancer feels seen, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
I’m known for my hands-on approach I teach with passion, intention, and high expectations, but also with love. I take pride in watching my dancers grow from shy beginners to confident performers who light up every stage they touch.
What sets me apart is the connection I build with my students and their families. My academy is more than just a place to dance it’s a family. I pour my heart into each class, making sure every dancer knows that hard work, consistency, and belief in themselves can take them anywhere. I also have that motherly approach to them.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how far we’ve come. From starting small to now being invited to perform at major events like the UniverSoul Circus, Major competitions around the world., local events and parades. A lot of Black own Studios don’t do what my studio does and that’s what set us apart. The experience and exposure is everything to my Dancers . We’ve built a reputation for excellence and professionalism. Seeing my dancers shine and knowing I played a part in their journey that’s what keeps me motivated every day.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, my goal is to continue growing Erika Kay Star Dance Academy and giving my dancers opportunities that go beyond the studio. I definitely want to see my girls have their own show featured on television one day something that highlights their talent, hard work, and the powerful sisterhood we’ve built.
When I look at what I’ve built over the past six years, it’s truly a sight to see. Watching these dancers evolve not just as performers but as young women with confidence and discipline fills me with pride. In the future, I want to expand our brand, travel more for conventions and competitions, and continue creating platforms for dancers to be seen and celebrated on a larger scale.
Ultimately, my dream is to inspire others to chase their goals fearlessly and to show that with faith, consistency, and purpose, anything is possible. This is only the beginning the best is yet to come.
