Diane Makish of East Fort Lauderdale on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Diane Makish shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Diane, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
My most surprising lesson is witnessing the extraordinary resilience of my clients and the things I’ve learned from them throughout my years of practice.
The way they have adapted through changes , overcoming hardships, or thriving after setbacks.
Some of my clients, I have been seeing for maintenance touchups for over 25 years, my procedures are sometimes 2 to 3 hours long. We talk about so many different topics. This is where I have learned the most, from their life experiences.
In some cases, it’s their attitudes that continuously inspire me & make me resilient to the challenges of life .
For this I am extremely grateful.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a cosmetic tattoo artist that has been in practice since 2000.

I opened my business About Face cosmetic clinic after a 5 year medical apprenticeship with a physician who was also a leading pioneer in the industry of permanent makeup.

Prior to that, I started as a self taught freelance makeup artist, working with models and photographers in Miami.
I wanted to incorporate skin care to my resume to open up some more avenues in the industry, so I met the required course hours to get my skin care license.

Subsequently, I met a wonderful woman who opened a med spa and that’s where preparation had met opportunity. It’s from there,
I started to climb the ladder and meet the extraordinary mentors and physicians that got me to where I am today.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My late father understood the person I could be before I had the wisdom to see it in myself.”
Unbeknownst to me , were the lessons I was learning not even consciously at the time. He was a very wise man with no ego a story for the books.
It wasn’t until he had passed away that I was able to read about the trials and tribulations of his life, almost a decade later. The things he never talked about when I was growing up. He was a humble man a great mentor and friend.

The most important lesson he taught me was learning balance in life. That your word is everything and that the measure of a man’s character is determined by how he’s remembered and spoken about when he is gone.

I never knew how much his teachings would impact and guide me in my life later on when things get harder because, even in the best of circumstances, they do.
It is the natural occurrence of the aging mind. What a great example of strength & grit he has shown me .
It is my daily guide and has definitely shaped how I see and conduct myself.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering came before my success.
For some, it is the other way around.
A tragic car accident in my early 20s changed my future’s trajectory.

All my friends were now at college, ready to embark on the new chapter of their lives, and I was dealing with the loss of my friends.
The subsequent years of repercussions, were very difficult.
However, it is these types of life experiences that mold us and make us who we are. I learned early on that every day is a gift never to be taken for granted.
Challenges like this can prepare you for the next stage in life. More resilient, more self aware and more conscious.
Meeting my best friend and supportive husband of 26 years and having my two beautiful children all came in perfect time.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Time always tells whether it’s going to be a fad or a shift. In the beginning, it can sometimes be hard to tell.
That’s why it’s important to do your research in depth.

A fad in my opinion is something very new , that has not been tried and true.
A short-lived surge in popularity usually driven by social media.
A fundamental shift reflects the long-lasting, evolution of a product or service.

I have always looked towards the long game, never short-term gains. Some of the procedure’s I see promoted in terms of anti-aging, can be so bad in the long-term.
In my opinion, it is important to
read articles go beyond the social media platforms, and ask questions.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace in my home with my family and my animals. I have two dogs and a bird. . Since the pandemic, I have not traveled. Only a few road trips. I haven’t found a need to go anywhere. I have learned to find pleasure in the simple things around me.

I love nature and spending time in my garden and at the beach . I practice hot yoga. It has strengthened my back after years of sitting in my tattoo chair.
It has been so helpful for me mentally and physically.

After watching a podcast on the long term effects of alcohol, I decided to challenge myself to a 3 month cellular cleanse and to completely abstain from drinking. A mind over matter mental challenge. It is one of the hardest things I have ever done , but one of the best decision’s I have ever made. The many years of night caps was a hard habit to break. I am very proud to say , It has now been almost 3 years with not a sip!
An accomplishment that has given me a special kind of peace and I am so Grateful! After all , health is wealth.
