Andrea Goldsmith shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Andrea, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I lose track of time when I paint. It’s like going into another stream of consciousness. I rarely remember the steps I took along the way unless I took some progression photos. Even then, most of it is a mystery to me. What brings me back to earth is that I stop frequently to assess the painting.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Andrea Goldsmith and I am a fine artist. Currently, my focus is on my abstract paintings. They are bold and colorful and expressive, and they are my way of reaching out to the world without words. My recent work is large and perfect for large walls in a home or office. I like abstracts because they are uniquely mine in that there is no external reference. The imagery was originally inspired by my visits to ancient ruins in Italy, Spain, and Greece. My most recent work has changed in that I am using more line and spontaneously building up the image, rather than using large color blocks. I like the feeling of movement and emotion. I also enjoy painting realistic subjects in a loose semi-abstract style. I recently painted a series of Maine and Florida landscapes. Whether abstract or more realistic, my style is easily recognizable for its broad brushstrokes and bright color. I had a large solo exhibition at the Alper JCC gallery in Miami and a solo show this year at SpaceConnect in West Palm Beach. My studio is in Delray Beach. Please contact me to arrange a studio visit.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Lack of trust is what breaks the bond between people. If you don’t believe that someone has your best interest at heart, you can’t open up to them, or rely on them. The closeness disappears. Sometimes, feelings for each other override the distrust and you can see that there might have been a misunderstanding.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Nobody wants to suffer, of course, but there have been many times when I did. I believe suffering taught me compassion for others. It is easier to understand the suffering of others when you have seen it up close firsthand. Having everything easy is great, but I think it can give you a false reality that everyone has the same easy circumstances.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My close friends know that maintaining a democracy in this country is what concerns me most right now.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would like to think that I have twenty or even thirty years left. But I am aware that might not be the case. The advantage to knowing that there is a finite amount of time is that I try not to waste it. I am much more focused on what I want to accomplish and what I need to do to get there. I focus on my painting and say no to distractions that would cut into my time. I still save time for talking to friends on the phone and watching tv and just relaxing, but I have learned to prioritize and save that for when everything else is finished. I go to sleep earlier and drink very little alcohol so that I can wake up early and be ready to work. I always did better when I was rushing to meet a deadline than when I had unlimited time.
