Micah Drum shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Micah, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Typically, I’ve hit snooze so many times that my phone is like, “Hey, do you want me to stop or…?”. By the time I’ve awoken from what feels like the fog of war, I have ten minutes to walk my dog, shower, brush my teeth, and get to work. The next half hour, I’m sporadically switching between YouTube until something interests me; by the time I find something interesting, I’ve arrived at work. After that, my mind races between actual work and completing unfinished songs. I think that’s the first 90 minutes? I could be wrong – no real way of knowing for sure.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Micah Drum (yes, like the instrument). I have a passion for storytelling, which fuels everything I do. With Drum and Company, the band I’m a part of, we want to tell our stories creatively. It’s truly art to us. Something I feel makes us unique is that we just want to have fun. We’re not trying to “make it” or go viral. I mean, if that happened, that would be dope, but we’re more concerned with doing what we do well, creating moments for people who came to see us play music so that they talk about it again in ten years; not in a “Oh my god, remember Drum & Co.? They were SO good that one random night,” kinda way but more like a “I don’t remember who was playing at (insert venue here), but I do remember having a kickass time with the people I love,” kinda way. In short, we’re more concerned with the people riding with us than we are with ourselves and being successful.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a kid who was not afraid of anything (except ghosts… piss off, ghosts!). I was colorful, imaginative, and unapologetically myself.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. 2024 really kicked my ass. I couldn’t catch a break. I just really needed a win. My dog passed away, I was taking my car into the shop for what seemed like every month (shoutout Bob’s Auto), and I wasn’t sure how I was going to do my part for my family and pay rent or put food on the table. But every day, I had a choice. Sometimes I chose to lie in bed and be depressed; other days, I chose to get up and hit back. Both kinds of days mattered; I can’t neglect the depressed parts of myself just because they’re unpleasant; I gotta let them know I’m there-I’m present. But also, the days when I hit back, I’d give life a swift kick to the nuts and remind it who’s boss… bitch.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy is not as bad as people think it is.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m telling stories and making music with people.
