Oscar Herrera of South Dade on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Oscar Herrera. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Oscar, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Writing songs and making music.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have a business called Spin Alley Vintage Radios & Phonographs. I restore and sell vintage radios, turntables and record players. I also do restorations and repairs for customers. What started as a hobby in 2008 has become a real business with over 300 restored items.

I have also recently returned to my first love of making music. After having played in several bands for about twenty years I left the music scene in 2002. In 2023 I retired from my regular job and immediately jumped back in. In the past two years I have released two solo records, “Songs For The Fallen Mountain King” in 2024 and “Castor and Pollux” in April of this year.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My mother. She set an example by keeping the household running and taking care of her two kids. She instilled in me a work ethic that began at the age of 13 when I landed my first summer job with her encouragement.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Those things you’re worrying about are not worth worrying about. They will mean nothing in the future.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My family.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was a good husband, father and grandfather and that I was relentlessly creative.
