An Inspired Chat with MC Ragoonan of Sunrise

We recently had the chance to connect with MC Ragoonan and have shared our conversation below.

MC, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I’m extremely proud to have released my first solo EP which is titled “Who is MC Ragoonan?” on all streaming platforms. It’s only been out for a few weeks but I think a lot of people enjoy the EP as much as I did creating it. I’m also very proud to have had an article done on myself and my EP from Miami-Dade College’s newspaper called The Reporter.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Off stage, my name is Shane Ragoonan. Onstage, I’m called MC Ragoonan. I started rapping when I was 13 years old, I was on my way to a volleyball game with my team and everyone started freestyling and out of nowhere, I jumped in and my team went bananas. It was there where my music journey began.

I refuse to stay in one lane. I love rap, punk rock, classic rock, Latin music, and pretty much anything that makes your head nod or your soul say “aye aye aye.”

Before going solo, I spent eight years rocking stages with a band called Galaxy Beat, where I learned valuable life lessons like how to survive group chats and band practice arguments.

In all seriousness, I learned a lot being in the band but my wife/manager always told me “if you ever want to go far in your career, you can’t be in Galaxy Beat”. So I left the band and here we are a couple of months later, MC Ragoonan’s stock is moving on up like The Jeffersons and it ain’t coming down any time soon.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think bonds between people can be broken by things like ego, money, greed, jealousy, anger, and even love or lust when they distort someone’s judgment. I experienced this when I lost someone I saw as a brother—a 20+ year friendship ended because he chose to side with someone he barely knew over our history.

But I also believe bonds can be restored. Like the journey of a thousand miles, it begins with a single step—someone swallowing their pride, reaching out, and opening the door to conversation. Healing starts when one person is willing to try.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
If I had to name the fear that has held me back the most in my life, it would be the fear of rejection. That fear made me stay silent when I should’ve spoken, step back when I should’ve leaned in, and hesitate when I should’ve taken a risk.

One defining moment came back in high school. I had feelings for a girl from the time we were freshmen. I wanted to tell her how I felt, but I kept replaying worst-case scenarios in my head—What if she doesn’t feel the same? What if I embarrass myself? What if I get rejected? That fear kept me quiet. When I finally gained the courage to tell her, she was already seeing someone else.

That moment stung—not just because I missed my chance, but because I realized fear had made the decision for me. From that day forward, I promised myself I would never let fear of rejection steal another opportunity from me.

And since then, I’ve proven to have kept good on that promise to myself. I’ve picked up the phone to call promoters, done interviews, performed live shows, and, my favorite victory of all, asked my wife to marry me. Rejection might still exist, but now, courage speaks louder.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’ve thought about this question a lot, especially when it comes to the difference—or maybe the lack of difference—between Shane Ragoonan and MC Ragoonan. Some people think they’re two separate identities, like one is a costume I put on and the other is who I really am underneath. But the truth is, they’re not different people. They’re the same person—just operating at different volumes.

Shane Ragoonan is a loving husband, godfather, son, grandson, and nephew. He’s grounded, connected to his family, and rooted in love and loyalty.

MC Ragoonan is Shane Ragoonan turned up to 12.
He’s the ultimate entertainer, stepping on stage with electric energy and unshakable confidence, giving you a show like you’ve never seen before—because he can. MC Ragoonan doesn’t just perform; he takes over the moment, commands the room, and makes sure you feel something before you leave.

So is the public version of me the real me?
Yes. But it’s not the only me.

Shane is the foundation. MC is the amplification.
One lives in the heart. The other lives on the stage.
Both are real. Both are me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When my time comes, I hope people say I lived life unapologetically as my true self. I want to be remembered as someone who never watered himself down for anyone, who stood firm for the people he loved, and who fought for them without hesitation.

I hope they talk about the way I gave everything I had whenever I stepped on stage—how I didn’t just perform, I left pieces of my soul under those lights. That I wasn’t afraid to go all in, every single time.

But more than the energy, the flash, or the moments of greatness—I hope the story people tell is that I made a difference, even if it was just in a few lives. That something I said, did, or created helped someone feel seen, stronger, or inspired to chase their own greatness.

Ultimately, I don’t want to leave this world as just an ordinary man.
I want the legacy to read: he mattered.
