Meshach Berry shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Meshach, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I’ve recently decided to pick up DJing. It’s been a few months now and I’ve grown so much already. Putting together my first setlist has brought me so much gratification and I can’t wait to continue improving.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Well first and foremost, my name is Meshach Berry and I’m a menswear blogger and YouTuber from Miami, Florida. I run the YouTube channel “Piece Of The Puzzle” and the website www.pieceofthepuzzlesc.com.
I specialize in fashion content that can range from full-on streetwear style guides to picking out accessories that are suitable for dapper attire.
By surfing the web, I was introduced to so many different forms of fashion and style. I would watch YouTube videos on how to put outfits together and I would discover styles of clothing that I didn’t even know existed.
After a while, I would take such pride in my style, that it honestly changed the way I felt about myself, in a way that nothing else could. When I would dress up, I would feel like “The Man.” My outfit became my suit of armor in a sense.
This feeling became so immense, that I wanted to help guide others through the different avenues of fashion, and how to explore their own personal style. I wanted others to experience this feeling, thus creating the reason why I chose this field.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
When I first read this question I thought to myself “I guess I’d say someone who didn’t create or want to be a creative,” but ever since I was a child that’s all I ever wanted to do—no matter the medium.
In grade school I had every intention of becoming a scientist and inventing new tech.
That passion for creating would soon transform from science to drawing to music and now fashion.
Hell, I serve as a copywriter for my day job. My entire life revolves around creating.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Going back to being a copywriter—I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in music industry.
But since I didn’t intern during school, I couldn’t really get any internships once I graduated.
So I took whatever internships I could find, and one required me to move to Atlanta to help launch a music tour for local indie acts.
Long story short—I ended up going broke and moving back home to Miami.
I had nothing to show for all those years in school. I was mad at the world and didn’t know what to do.
But I decided I would still pursue a career as a creative, even if it wasn’t directly through music. So I took up several writing internships and eventually landed a dream job as a copywriter. Now I get to create for a living and couldn’t be more thankful.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
To eventually get into music or entertainment. My degree will not go to waste. I don’t care if I have to bounce from job to job—I promise I will find myself working with either music or entertainment in some capacity in the future, and that’s a promise I intend to keep.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That my empathy for others was my strongest trait. That I would always put myself in the shoes of others before judging them. It’s something that I pride myself on, and something I hope others will remember most about me.
