Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Foster.
Hi Dennis , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In the world of yachting, the road to success often begins with humble origins, and for me, it all started in a little red van. My early days were spent washing boats, getting my hands dirty, and working tirelessly for a boat manufacturer. It was honest work, but deep down, I always knew that I wanted something more. Over the years, I quit several times to venture out on my own, but financial struggles would inevitably pull me back into working for others. Each time, I found myself frustrated but never defeated.
One day, I made a life-changing decision: I was no longer going to work for anyone but myself. It was a turning point, but it was also just the beginning of a long, uphill battle. Building my business from the ground up wasn’t easy, but I wasn’t afraid of hard work. Every morning, before the dockmaster arrived at the marina at 5:00 a.m., I would sneak in, jumping fences and placing homemade flyers on every boat. It was guerilla marketing in its purest form—raw, unpolished, and relentless. I didn’t care how it looked; I just knew I needed to get my name out there.
Slowly but surely, things started to pick up. What began as simple boat cleaning jobs grew into something much bigger. I expanded into various fields, learning everything I could about yacht repairs and construction. I took every opportunity that came my way, mastering different trades, from carpentry to engine work. My hands-on experience became my biggest asset, and I built a reputation for being the guy who could solve any problem on a boat.
Through sheer persistence and an unwavering refusal to give up, Fosters Yacht Services was born. It wasn’t an overnight success; it was the result of countless early mornings, late nights, and moments of doubt. But the vision never wavered. Today, we are a 20-man operation, and Fosters Yacht Services is proud to be one of Fort Lauderdale’s leading yacht repair companies, based at Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center.
I’ve come a long way from that little red van. What started as a one-man hustle has grown into something far bigger than I ever imagined. And while the journey was filled with setbacks and struggles, it taught me the most important lesson of all: success is about never giving up, even when the odds are stacked against you.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building a business from the ground up is a challenge that tests not only your skills but your resilience. For me, one of the greatest obstacles I faced was constant rejection. It was a daily reality in the early stages of my career. I wasn’t located in a shipyard, I didn’t have a long history in the industry, and I certainly didn’t have the trust of potential clients. These factors made it nearly impossible to land consistent work, but I refused to let them define my future. Rejection wasn’t a sign to give up—it was a challenge to push through.
The early days of my business were a grind, often discouraging, and full of frustration. Without the credibility that comes from years in the industry or the advantage of being situated in a well-known shipyard, I was fighting an uphill battle. Every call I made, every pitch I gave, seemed to end in the same way: “Thanks, but no thanks.” People didn’t want to take a chance on someone new, someone without a long-established business. It was understandable, but it didn’t make the rejection any easier.
What made it even more difficult was the fact that many of the clients I was targeting were looking for reliability. Yacht owners and captains need to trust the people they hire with their boats, and in such a niche market, reputation is everything. Without the shipyard location to give me credibility, I knew I had to build my reputation from the ground up. But every rejection, every door that closed in my face, was a reminder that trust doesn’t come easy—and in my case, it wouldn’t come quickly.
Still, I refused to quit. I knew that if I was going to make it, I had to be persistent. Every rejection was a lesson, a stepping stone to the next opportunity. I began focusing on proving my worth through action. I took on small jobs, often ones that no one else wanted, and did them to the best of my ability. I showed up early, worked late, and made sure that my work spoke for itself. Slowly but surely, the word started to spread. People began to notice the quality of my work, and they started calling back.
Even without the prestige of a shipyard or a long list of clients, I was determined to make my mark. I kept pressing on, believing that the key to success was outlasting the obstacles in front of me. I may not have had years of experience or the perfect location, but I had something just as important: the willingness to keep going, no matter what.
Eventually, the tide began to turn. The same people who once rejected me began to seek me out for work. Trust was built, not through flashy marketing or a prime location, but through persistence, reliability, and hard-earned results. And while the struggle for recognition was long and filled with setbacks, I learned that success is not about avoiding rejection—it’s about pushing through it until the goal is achieved.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
