Daily Inspiration: Meet Dionne Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dionne Young.

Hi Dionne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Baking has always been a part of who I am. My dad’s side of the family are all bakers, so you could say it’s in my DNA. For me, baking isn’t just about making desserts — it’s something that truly calms me and brings me joy.
I’ve always loved Jamaican pastries — they’re my absolute favorite — so I wanted to recreate the ones I grew up with, some with a little twist of my own, and others just the way tradition made them. I actually started with Gizzada, because that’s my all-time favorite, and from there things just took off!
Along the way, I started making ice cream too, and I’m excited to be adding a few new flavors to my menu soon. A friend of mine saw my potential and told me about Farm Vibes, and that’s really where my journey took shape. Now, every Saturday, you can find me there sharing my Jamaican treats with the community.
It’s been such a beautiful start — I’m so thankful for the support, the smiles, and for being able to share a little taste of home with everyone who stops by.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, it’s been a pretty smooth road, and I’m really grateful for that. Of course, like any new journey, there have been little bumps along the way — learning how to balance everything, figuring out what works best for my customers, and managing long hours in the kitchen. But honestly, it’s all been part of the process. Every challenge has taught me something new and helped me grow. I’m just thankful that the support from my family and customers has made the experience feel more rewarding than difficult

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

I specialize in creating authentic Jamaican desserts with a modern twist. My signature treat — and now my number one seller — is my Jamaican Rum Cake Cheesecake . I wanted to take the traditional Jamaican rum cake that we all know and love and give it a little twist, so I combined it with creamy cheesecake. It turned out to be a hit!
Everything on my menu is baked completely from scratch. I grate my own coconuts and sweet potatoes, and I even make my own coconut milk for my puddings. It’s a lot of work, but it’s all worth it because you can truly taste the difference.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
When it comes to luck, I’d say I’ve been blessed with a good bit of it — but I also believe that preparation meets opportunity. The biggest piece of good luck for me was having a friend who saw my potential and encouraged me to join Farm Vibes. That one moment opened a whole new door for my business and connected me with so many amazing people who truly appreciate what I do.
Of course, there are always little moments that don’t go as planned — a batch that doesn’t come out just right or a rainy market day — but I’ve learned to see those as lessons, not bad luck. Every experience has helped me grow and reminded me to stay grateful. So, I guess my kind of luck is the kind that shows up when passion, hard work, and faith come together.
