Hi Melissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey really started with a love for people and creating experiences that make them feel good. I spent nearly 10 years in hospitality, where I learned the importance of detail, care, and connection—how the little things can completely change how someone feels. Over time, that passion for making others feel seen and cared for evolved into a deeper interest in skincare.
I’ve always had a deep passion for makeup—it’s been my art form and my way of expressing creativity. But as I got older, I started struggling with adult acne, and that experience changed my relationship with beauty. It made me want to understand skin on a deeper level and learn how to truly care for it, not just enhance it.
That’s when I decided to become a licensed esthetician and create 1Z1 by MELZ, which stands for “One of One.” The name represents my belief that no two people are the same, and every treatment should be as unique as the person receiving it. As I continue my own skincare journey, I hope to inspire others to care for their skin, embrace their individuality, and find confidence in their natural beauty.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but I think that’s what makes the journey meaningful. Transitioning from hospitality into the beauty industry came with a lot of learning curves—especially stepping out on my own and building a brand from the ground up. There were moments of self-doubt, long nights of studying and planning, and times where I had to remind myself why I started.
Every challenge has taught me something—about resilience, patience, and trusting my vision. The process hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been real, and I wouldn’t change that for anything.
We’ve been impressed with 1z1byMelz, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
1Z1 by MELZ is a private facial suite built around the idea that beauty and skincare should always feel personal. The name “1Z1” stands for “One of One,” which represents my belief that no two people are the same—and neither should their treatments be. Every facial I perform is fully customized to the client in front of me, based on their skin goals, concerns, and lifestyle.
I specialize in custom facials that blend result-driven skincare with relaxation and intention. Each experience is designed to help clients not only see a difference in their skin but also feel a difference in themselves. What truly sets 1Z1 apart is the attention to detail—the energy, the comfort, and the connection. I want every person who walks in to feel seen, cared for, and confident.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that everything about 1Z1 by MELZ comes from the heart—the name, the atmosphere, and the experience. It’s not about creating perfection; it’s about creating confidence. My hope is that anyone who visits 1Z1 leaves glowing, refreshed, and reminded that they’re truly one of one.
How do you think about luck?
I definitely believe luck has played a part in my journey—good luck, in the sense of being in the right place at the right time. I feel incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to work out of a private facial suite located inside Mary-Irma Salon & Spa, an established spa that’s been part of the community for over 20 years. Being in such a respected and trusted space has allowed 1Z1 by MELZ to grow in an environment that already values beauty, care, and professionalism.
I see that as more than just luck—it’s alignment. Every step of this journey has felt guided in some way, and I’m thankful for the people and opportunities that have come my way. It’s a reminder that when you stay true to your purpose and put in the work, the right doors open at the right time.
